On my 3.2 I'm sure it was the outside temperature sensor fitted in the front bumper. If you open the bonnet you can see it fixed in its holder behind the front bumper. I replaced mine and if I recall it wasn't much money to replace. Check the wiring to it first though.  :y

Yes, the outside temperature sensor is fitted to the front bumper central , inside, shares a loom with the fog lights .
there is a plug to the N/S under the headlamp area that that loom plugs in.
could just be a bad connection
or new sensor about £7

Easy enough to dig out and repair ;)

Replacing is a different issue as finding an unscabby used one could be problematic. Notwithstanding that you're dumping the car at some point...

Are they not the same as the ones in, say, an astra?

If its in the bumper loom, it would be trivial to repair I reckon.  Once the bumper is off, obviously.  Don't like removing that bumper unless absolutely necessary, as it had seen too much action before I got it, and I then did a bloody good job of melting it.  And then she has idiotted on a high kerb.

And as you rightly point out, I suspect it will never get driven in my ownership again.

There's unlikely to be much holding the loom in, and unplugging it is easy enough from underneath, even with the chavtastic bumper :D

As the car is now at the patch it up for another year stage, cut the sensor wires back to where you can reach them without removing the bumper, and attach the new sensor somewhere more convenient. Use Sikaflex, Araldite, cable ties, lockwire, speedtape, whatever you have.
