It's bit Weird. The Mrs and I have always had our own cars, I had a Volvo XC70 that was used quite a bit for work, lugging stuff around. But I've given up my little business, the XC70 had quite a few little niggly things (Auto gear stick would stick, dull headlights, broken door handle, hand brake cable) nothing terminal but hard to get fixed and annoying. Also, I just didn't use it much. The garage would tick me off for not putting enough miles on it.

So, with annual service, MOT, Tax, and insurance all due, I got shot of it, with Mrs and I now sharing a V70 (she uses it more than I do). I'm not a petrolhead and see cars as purely functional. So far I've seen no compelling reason or had any big urge to get something and it's been quite nice not having to think about stuff that needs doing. But it's just a bit odd

I rolled a 600cc Regal saloon.....and a 700cc Regal Supervan.

Fools and Horses van was a Regal although for some reason people think it's a Robin.

 Absolutely not. A nice sedate Morris Minor Woody should fit the bill. Picnic rug and a thermos flask and some bread to feed the ducks.

I like my V70 D5. 

It has a bit of grunt if I give it a bit of welly and the straight 5 has a nice growl, but compared to the BMW 530d it replaced, it's like driving a narrow boat!

Yes our D4 is early enough (2012) to be a 5 Cylinder model, 2.0 with a lazy 160BHP, I think they went to 4 cylinder the year after. The V70 feels quite a small car (Feels Omega sized) after driving the 530D.

I'd wager that if some retro bank robbers nicked Mick's Grannie off the drive on the one night he'd left it out and robbed a bank somewhere in Lincolnsausageshire, they'd be away up the A1 while Electro-plod were waiting for their milkfloat to charge and the one out on patrol would die before they reached the South Yorks border.

I dunno about that... My 2.8 carburetted auto struggled to do 14 mpg

Electro-plod would be stuffing themselves with doughnuts while the milkfloat was recharging, so even if they did catch up with the retro bank robbers, they wouldn't be able to run after them!

Yeah. Dunkin Donuts would broker a deal with the police to install chargers at all of their outlets, so the bobbies could take their lunch break while charging their vehicles. Win win.

The Plod XC60 and V90cc are both petrol powered with a mild hybrid set up and available relatively unrestricted to 250kmh aka 155 mph. So whilst they won't set the world on fire they will still keep up with most of the traffic.

I'd thought along those lines. A hot hatch wouldn't do it for me, it would need to be more like a conventional sports car. But, it just wouldn't get used much.

I drove a lot before retirement, too much, and was part of the reason for retiring. I got fed up with sitting in traffic jams, not getting where I needed to be in decent time, the constant risk of getting "done" for some reason. It's a long time since I've driven for fun.
