Title: Boilers?
Post by: Del Boy on 09 October 2014, 17:38:07
Evening people,

Parents' boiler is leaking a fair bit, now before I set about trying to find out how to fix it, is there any government schemes or company schemes, that'll help them out? They're not on pension credit because they're £5 over the boundary. Can't see the poor old pair sit there worrying about putting the heating on because they just haven't got the money to afford a new one. Failing that, boiler parts for a 20 odd year old boiler, what's the chances?? Personally I know naff all about any schemes, or boilers themselves, hence the questions  :-[.

 :y.

I assume it leaking from the heat exchanger?
The heat exchanger is bound to be obsoleat.....but the plumber that changed my 32yo boiler told me that you can still get gasket kits .... if so, maybe worth getting the cover of it and see where its leaking from  :-\

As for grants from the gov.....i believe to qualify you have to be on pension credits if retired .....

There are a couple of companies about that will replace the boiler free of charge and service/repair it free for a monthly charge....about £37/month last time i looked.....but you are locked into a 10 year contract with an annual increase every year of about 2 or 3%.....so you end up paying 8-9K over the 10 years.....
A couple of them of the top my head are .... everlasting boilers and hassle free boilers...

That'll be that then  ;D. See he was looking at some Boiler stop leak malarkey, whether that's going to do anything though I don't know? I'll give him a call so I'm not as vague  :y.

We had a brand new boiler fitted few months back along with the controller and new pump...power flush.

We had a knock on the door "Would you like a new boiler"...assumed it was some old Pony and told the bloke to leave my garden before I set my feral children on him.

Few weeks later different firm same patter...she had large breasts (least im honest) so allowed her to give me the patter and agreed to a survey, long story short 18 months later get a call to arrange new boiler and bits.

Both of us working...but qualified to the Government scheme as we get working tax credits, was a long list of qualifying benefits/pension stuff and several which applied to the older generation.

Took a while from start to finish mind. :-\

Probably bit late now, labourer at work was knicking £800 boilers and knocking them out at £40 a pop. :o

If they are getting the pension you say they are then they can get nothing, found this out when trying to get insulation for the 77 year old MIL.

Best thing to do is get British gas round, they will give you all the relevant blurb, then you go to,a local tradesman to do the job.
There is a www I think its called green deal or something similar. :-X

Best thing to do is get British gas round, they will give you all the relevant blurb and a scandalous price, then you go to a local tradesman to do the job at a fraction of British Gas's price.

This is a more likely scenario biggriff!  ;)

Would it not be worth taking out a Policy with the likes of British Gas?  After a month of taking out a policy (Silver or Gold????) the entire system is covered without penalty.

My parents have gained very well from the BG Gold policy, and the service (at least in this area) seems to be excellent.
