'Brakelight check'
« on: 29 February 2008, 16:12:58 »

Hi all
I might sound like a complete muppet by the end of this post, but I’ve been having autobox trouble which I put down to low gearbox oil. I’ll be getting it changed shortly, but I just heard a very interesting thing from a mechanic on the phone - can anybody confirm this?
When I start the car, I get a warning saying ‘brakelight check’ - yet all the brakelights work fine.[ch8200]He reckons on these cars a loose connection on the brakelights can cause the autobox to get stuck in third. I checked my connections only to find my drivers side brakelight wasn’t clipped in completely, it is now, but I won’t be driving it for a few hours.[ch8200]So is this a known probelm? Can I[ch8200]expect a miracle when[ch8200]I set off? The strange 'trying to stall' behaviour when I slow down to stop might be it getting stuck in third, no?

Certainly haven't heard of this before! I'm sure Marks DTM will verify.

The "Brakelight Check" is a std. feature until you step on the pedal which also works the safety interlock.
Not heard about the brake light and third gear thing though?
I owned another car with auto-box that stalled the engine when stopping the car; `turned out to be the converter lock-up clutch was stuck in engagement.

Weird. Sounded unlikely to me too, I'm an Auto noob so figured it was a standard thing, but it interested me to hear that said with so much conviction. I'll feed back later, bet I look like a twunt again when I stall at the lights though in rush hour!!  ;D

Its displayed until brake switch is closed first time (on post 98 - earlier just light up CHECK lamp).  If its NOT going out after depressing brake pedal, then the switch is fubar.

Some mechanics worry me......

The brakelight check is displayed until the brake pedal is checked as it needs the pedal pressed to get the bulbs to light so it can measure the current!

As far as affecting the autobox, if the switch was faulty then yes, I could beleave it.

As predicted it was a complete load of bobbins! Switch is fine incidentally.

Cars still stalling at the lights/fighting to stall but I've got the diagnosis in another thread from you marvellous people - autobox fluid. Just gotta wait for my (normal cheap honest wise old) mechanic to come free now and I'm sorted - for pence.

ta guys & soz for starting a daft thread!   :-[

No such thing as daft questions ... if you don't know the answer how do you know a question is daft ??

There are many daft answers however ...  :)

Glad things are on the way to being sorted  :)
