Title: Cheap code readers.
Post by: Mr.OmegaMan on 05 June 2013, 17:34:06
Looking to buy one for my 2002 2.2 / 2002 3.2

Was thinking along the lines of something like this   :-\
LINK (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/360501633719?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_sacat%3D0%26_from%3DR40%26_nkw%3D360501633719%26_rdc%3D1)

Looking for one cheap that will do all the essentials, clearing codes, eml, etc..

Thanks.
 :)

That ones good enough for basics Jay. Obviously won`t talk to other systems, ABS, autobox, alarm , SRS etc

Would something like this (which has been mentioned in a few old threads be a better choice)
 Link (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Autel-MaxiScan-MS509-OBD-II-EOBD-Scanner-OBD2-Car-Diagnostic-Code-Reader-UK-/330934620357?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item4d0d3d90c5)

Could do with one that has live data to check this pedal trick code

P0130 - Indicates a fault on an O2 sensor which probably needs live data to see if it's a slow O2 sensor or something else causing a fault on that bank.

I was thinking i could delete all the codes presently on the car then see which ones come back then look further into them  :-\

Received today the Autel MS509

Only 2 stored codes on the 3.2 Elite bank 1 & 2 CATS below efficiency which is common for 3.2s i believe and no pending codes.

Cleared EML according to the device...

But it wouldn't clear a airbag light on my 2005 1.5TD Hyundai and doesn't work with the 2.2 Omega :-\

( if i put the live date info up and O2 live date can anyone check the results ? Trouble is the device wont connect to the laptop so will have to put the data in manually typing it  :o ;D )

Three questions, chaps.

1. Will it work on a 2.6 Omega?

2. Will it work on a 2003 Corsa 1.2 SXI?

3. How can I tell if it's a cheap copy (fake) that won't work properly?

If all Okay I'll buy one for just over thirty quid. :y :y

Aaron has one of these, that I borrowed, works fine for code reading clearing on engine and Auto box. Don't recall any other ecu's available.

Live data on engine, I didn't see/use any graphs, but the data set seemed comprehensive enough, considering.

Bit late, but if checking lambdas, expect to see the figures oscillating between high and low, once they are warmed up and the engine is up to temp. I would imagine the live data option would give a graph showing that info...?

Bit late though. ::)

EDIT: This is from the 3.2 Elite.

What are the expected figures for the MAF when it's reached temperature at idle on a 3.2

Just gone over the live data video on the MAF again. It's fluctuating between g/s 3.75 - 4.0 going by other threads shouldn't it be around 15.00 ? Would this indicate the MAF is on its way out ?

Thanks..

The MAF readings aren't in the same units as the Tech2 guideline figures, so it's hard (read: very) to compare them directly.. yours sounds like about what mine read on the MS509 though, from memory, and it read fine on the Tech2, meaning that number ought to be about right  :y

Hi guys,

I have this scanner on order (hoping it'll arrive today or tomorrow).

i watched a good Eric the Car Guy video and really it's use is to just clue you in. When you're looking at the o2 sensor output for example, youre not really looking at the exact figures. youre just looking to see o2 1 flipping from high to low and o2 2 just staying around zero.

Exactly - computers can't replace human intuition.. so there's a degree of interpretation of stuff you need to do (not always, but a lot of the time)

A code reader can't tell you want is wrong, it can only guide you in diagnosis.

3.0 is about 13kg/hr

Or about 3.6g/s, which I think is the units the MS509 is using.. If my maths is right :)
