When is a car 'for restoration' & when should you just throw the towel in and admit that it really should just be swept up & scrapped?

Honda S800

Riley

I remember the little Honda from my youth. It wears an 'F' plate so 1967/68 by my reckoning.

If memory serves it displaced about 790cc, but threw out about 75 BHP......pretty impressive for the time. :y

Agree with you re the Honda Andy, but the Riley that will be worth a lot of money when renovated.  Pity its got its carbs as I've still got a pair of SUs on a manifold off an early 2.5 lit Riley.

The Riley looks to me as though it's had a fire at some time .... eg no seating material at all is left. Fire/heat does some weird & wonderful things to the make-up of steel.  ???
It would have someone's pride & joy in its day.  :y

Doubt if its had a fire looking at it - altho seats etc gone, springing and frame look pretty good.  At that age and probably just left outside would require reupholstering etc.  Also engine bay undamaged and tyres still evident ;)

Yes .... you're probably right - still has the 'plastic' - Bakelite on the steering wheel too  ;)

Still way too much money for a basket case Riley though

Saw one of these sell at Sandown auto auctions a few years ago. Fully restored in mint condition, original owner. The wife wanted it, so i bid up to 5k. The car went for 14k in the end. She ended up with a old Fiat Aberth 500 instead

unfortunately you can blame all those stupid classic car mags/programs spouting on about investment/value-unfortunately
people buy into this and see any vehicle that is old is worth lots of money :'( and so rich people buy up cars and seal them away as investments-look how mk1/2 escorts now go for silly money-my consul cost me £400 years ago-now stripprd out worth £2000+ as it is-I would'nt sell it though as always loved them :y
AND I have seen worse cars than those fully restored-not for profit but for love as they spent thousands and may years too
