Another good day
« on: 18 February 2007, 20:09:34 »

Auto Addict, Tunnie and I did a 'quick' disc and pad change on Tunnies dad's 2.2.  A say quick, but we started at 11am and finished around 3pm.  But we were doing a how to, and AA and I were sat in chairs ribbing Tunnie non stop, so productivity was not good.  Plus we had to stop for tea and bacon butties.

Then JamesV6CDX and his mate Markie turned up in Jame's new 2.0l - the one that the LPG stuff is going on.  James and Markie got stuck straight into a Rover cambelt, while I helped Tunnie finish off his Dad's 2.2 brakes, and fit cruise, as Tunnies dad needed the car to catch a plane.

Rover cambelt wasn't entirely going to plan, and turned out it was a tooth out, and probably had been since we did the head gasket - no wonder she had been complaining it wasn't as quick as before  ::)

In the meantime, Tunnie went home to drop off his Dad's 2.2, and fetch the Senny - still full of leather interior we picked up yesterday in Nottingham. So scattered the leather across my front lawn. On closer inspection, I think the leather is in pretty good nick, just needs a damn good clean and a bit of conditioner on it.

More bacon butties :)

Tunnie again disappeared and got his own 2.2 so we could have a look at his window problem.  Got the swicth unit out, but looks like its an electronic module, so probably easier to test by swapping with his dad's one (who by this time was on his way to airport) to see if its the switch unit, or a motor problem.  A concerning noise from Tunnies cambelt area was the lowlight of the day, and I think a new cambelt needs to be done before that goes much further.

A quick look around Jame's new 2.0l, although it was dark.  Nice front fogs - not!  Apart from that, it looks decent.  A quick play with Tech2 on it to fix MID (came out of 2.5) FC readings, and to clear any codes on systems the Tech2 would read on it. First car I haven't been able to read engine ECU - not sure if its any different from a 97 ECU?

A quick play with the electric leather seats was unsuccessful, though it was getting too dark and cold to persevere with it, so I think James and Markie are going to play with them later - PDF of seat wiring sent James.

So with everyone gone, Mrs TheBoy and I take the Rover for a spin, and she confirms that the pick up is now better than the cam timing is correct ;)

Time for beer now :)

Job is indeed a good un!! Sounds like a profitable day guys.

Beer and top gear here... ;)

Removed the top end / head / inlets and exhaust manifolds from a rover 600 turbo today. Rebuilt it for fun in the back yard with the already removed turbo and radiators.....it looked really prety

Then realised i couldnt lift it to my garage...

Yep was a good day, my dad sends his thanks he noticed a big change in the smoothness of the autobox. When its warm you can only notice it change gear by watching the rev gauge.

My cambelt is a worry, not sure if its that bolt i sheared off before has caused something to go loose. However having my ear close to the cam cover it seamed to be a lot of top end noise in the belt area, baring?  :-/

Many thanks to JamesV6CDX for offering to come over and replace it next weekend  :y

Pass my thanks too Jaime to Mrs TheBoy for bacon buttie and tea supply  :y

Its great to put more faces to the names!

It has indeed been a good day. We went over to Martin Imber ( first thing ) to look at the LPG stuff and make some plans (more about that on the LPG thread)

Then straight up the A422 to Brackley, where we found Jaime, Tunnie and Auto Addict fitting disks and pads.

We managed the Rover cambelt change pretty quickly, without any hitches. I have no idea how we managed to get it a tooth out last time though. The cam marks actually looked like they were 100% spot on visually, the only indication was that the locking tool wouldn't go in. Not really sure what happened there, because we always double checked such things as we went along, with the rebuild  :-/

Thankfully we had always rotated the engine by hands a few times, so no risk of valves contacting  ::)

Anyhow, new timing belt kit fitted, timing verified by three of us, and pickup is now much better. Phew ;D

We managed to pile the leather into the 2.0, it all went in very easy actually.

Had an leisurely drive back from Brackley, took us just over an hour and 20 mins. The fuel computer is now reading 35.4mpg, which is about right, so thanks for that adjustment!!

Tunnie's cambelt noise - I don't like it at all. It sounded like a diesel knock! We did consider that it may be that bolt that sheared causing vibration, but the more I think about it I'm not convinced. The cover was solidly on there by hand, and not visually vibrating. I reckon tensioner or something has had it.

However on the bright side, the car is now in Tunnie's garage, and it's not going to be started again until it's changed, so no harm done!

Tunnie is going to get a timing belt kit, water pump, and aux belt through the week, and Markie and I are driving down to his place on Saturday to lend him a hand fitting it, in return for him kindly doing a de-tour for my seats!

Tonight, well, in a minute, Markie and I are going to get that drivers seat and see what's going on with the electrics on it.  (cheers for the diagrams Jaime)

Then tomorrow, all being well, I'm going to try and fit the seats to the car!

Sounds like an interesting day, so you got to the A422 easily, my boss lives in Inkberrow, (where we work!) and another villager gave him a ride to Alcester in about 5 minutes in an Escort RS1800!!!!

It was nice to meet a fellow OOF member, and hope to meet a few more this year.

I will HAVE to get my bumper resprayed!!!!

I got a feeling its that too thinking on the way back, the noise has only just started and a lot of it was coming from the "top end" that bolt is a lot further down..

I'll order the kit tomorrow  :y

Sounds like a plan Craig!

Did you get that Lambda Sensor you needed? Sure James should have one...

Video for 2.2 cambelt sounds very good, lots of 4 pots out there and its a lot simpler than the V6!

I shall stock up on bacon butties and tea can be supplied from Chopsdad that he very kindly sent me  :y
