Have noticed a slight  dry sound to a rattle around the middle of the cambelt area the last couple of days, I am due a new belt assy within the next three thousand miles, so phoned my car mechanic up this morning and have it booked in for Thursday, for the belt and tensioners, also the water pump, this is the item that I think could be on the way out, as at the 40k mark the pump was not changed so its comming up to the 80k mark, am I correct in thinking this could be it, are they a common fault to go around the 80k mark. I can only think by changing every thing around that area should remove the fault, unless you have any other ideas.

To see if it is the pump, remove aux belt and run for a max of 20s or so. If no noise, then must be something driven by aux belt.

Worth changing pump anyway at next cambelt

Just been through this very scenario and my noise turned out to be the water pump....and mine was changed only 7-8000 miles ago

Ah.  Cambelt driven pump then.  I wouldn't be taking any chances!

I have seen pumps fail around 60k mark.... i would get that all changed ASAP cause as mentioned water pump is cambelt driven.

On my 2.2 the original water pump didnt get as far as 60k......it was in the 50's k when the bearings started to go.......so for the cost of water pumps worth doing every 40k along with cambelt

Thanks for all the replies, have taken the car of the road, dont want to chance a busted engine, will only be used to drive the 3 miles to the car mechanic on Thursday. better safe than sorry.

Of course, you could always do cambelt and pump yourself and save lots of pennies!

Whichever way, its cambelt kit, not just cambelt that needs doing.

Might sound odd, but have not worked on a car since I sold a Landrover that would about 8 years ago, spent many hours repairing and the odd welding jobs on it a true off roader of the road more than on LOL, when I went back to cars I thought I would give the spanners up, and have used the same car mechanic since, thanks for the advise about the camshaft kit, he will be fitting the kit with a new water pump.

Well, placed the Omega in on Thursday for repair, was told how lucky I was not to have a wrecked engine, it was the water pump, one part had fallen of on it and must have got caught with the cambelt as the belt had a chunk out of it about a third of the width, when he took the cover of I was amazed at seeing the problem, so the moral is change the water pump at the same time as the cambelt assy( which I can say was not done at its last change as this pump must have done 76k), he changed the tensioners as well, but they still seemed fine. The car is now running like a dream again.
