Gas & Leccy Bills
« on: 01 April 2024, 11:14:29 »

Woo hoo they've lowered our vastly inflated gas & leccy bills!    Slightly...  ::)

I'm with Octopus on the standard variable tariff and I was paying:

Gas: 7.80p kwh  S/C 32.94p per day.
Elec: 29.17p Kwh  S/C 62.11p per day.

My new rates are:

Gas: 6.51p kwh S/C 34.11p per day.
Elec: 24.95p kwh S/C 70.60p per day.

Although they've reduced the rates on usage slightly, the bastards have jacked up the standing charge again!  >:(

Who are you with and what are you paying?  ???

That sounds above the new price cap rates....

https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/publications/changes-energy-price-cap-between-1-april-30-june-2024#:~:text=Electricity%20rates,and%20Wales%20and%20includes%20VAT.

I'm with the ever useless British Gas since my energy company went tits up 2 or 3 years back, and they charge me the OFGEM rates for energy and standing charge.

That's probably because I pay monthly for my usage rather than having a direct debit.  I know I pay slightly more, but I have control and they can't swipe huge amounts from my bank account.

I pay a month in arrears as well, so it's like having a free overdraft!  :)

I'm with Optopus and have been on a fixed tariff since July, it was slightly cheaper for gas and leccy before this reduction and is slightly dearer now. But..my standing charges are much cheaper, so that makes up for the fuel.

I pay by direct debit, but can alter the amount at any time.

I've had problems with energy companies taking large amounts from my account and have found getting refunds from them is like getting blood out of a stone.  >:(

Hence, I pay my bills the old fashioned way and always make sure my account is in debit.  Fk 'em!  :-X

I have a massive overdraft from Octopus because they didn't increase my direct debit during the silly prices, but reduced it by the amount of the government top-up, then only hiked it a couple of months ago.

I'm not complaining that they decided to give me a couple of grand of interest free loan. ;D

I seem to recall you saying you kept massively in credit with your energy company, which probably explains the low monthly figure.

Yes I put £1500 in our account when all the ridiculous figures were first quoted quite a while back as it was earning  nothing in my ISA, I was paying £60 per month then & they wanted to increase it to £300 per month ! I've never paid that amount for anything ever in my life, we are now £597 in credit which suits me fine & paying £57 per month.

Only £57😱  standing charge will be over £30 a month leaving only £27 for gas and electricity?  Are you sure you don’t mean £57 per week?

Well.... The reality is that you are paying more than £57 a month because they are chipping away at your credit balance as well.

Been paying £195 a month here. Currently £800+ in credit. British Gas should let me know imminently how much its going to drop.

I really don't mind being in credit, they've already offered me a refund which I declined+ I have the opportunity to "skip" payments if required everyone has their own preferences with finances,. if I needed it I'd simply request a refund.

That's exactly why I put the £1500 in there to pay my bills , the monthly payments are based on our estimated usage & of course  our remaining credit balance, simples 👍

Personally, I think the power companies are scumbags and they get what I owe them and nothing more.  :-X

The cash is better off in my account earning a pittance in interest!  ;D

I don't mind paying for something I use regardless of price, the one that gets "my goat " is vehicle tax & all this emissions boll ocks, we all know that it's utter shite and the cash isn't going where its supposed to, we must have the worst roads in Europe,  all motorists are being fu**ed up the arse in the UK good & proper. We've recently come home from the Carribbean islands I know that there are bad parts but overall the roads are fantastic nearly every vehicle you see is a large SUV & the sun is shining  & the crime rates are virtually zero, signs stating that bad behaviour will result in the  offender being jailed are clearly  visible, try using " mental health issues" boll ocks over there.

Re the fuel costs/direct debit, had I agreed to the ridiculous figure of £300 per month from the 1st of July 2023 I would have so far paid £3000 to them when in fact I have to date paid them £2070 & still have almost £600 credit .

We too could sell all our infrastructure to the Chinese...  ::)

Plenty of criminality everywhere, but some places are better at protecting the tourist areas from too much of it.

Just shows what utter nonsense can be put out, I'd sooner spend a fortnight at any of the islands we visited, than a weekend in any English coastal town , the UK has become a total disgrace. We visited Jamaica in 1979 & it was pretty bad then it is the only place I wouldn't go to now. We felt absolutely safe on every island we visited & were not hassled on any of the beaches.

Not surprised to see any of those islands on the list the only surprise is that Haiti and Dominican Republic aren't in the top ten.

The tourist industry brings in alot of money, so the various hotels etc go to alot of trouble to keep their properties safe.

Not sure it is utter nonsense.  Most Caribbean islands have extremely high crime rates, often around theft and mild assault and muggings. Very often you are advised not to leave the hotel unaccompanied, and only use official tours.

The root cause is often down to poverty rather than greed.  Which is why many of those islands have beaches that are secured from the locals, and discrete but heavy armed security around the hotels.  No matter what excursions you book, you will never get to see the "real" island.  Same goes for other places, like the Red Sea resorts.

I'm sure the lefties will claim similar for our run down towns in the UK, but we know that's utter 'dangle berries'.  We have a welfare state that, rightly or wrongly, keeps our lame and lazy in fags and lotto tickets.

I can only reiterate we walked around all the islands we visited & felt totally safe it was a real pleasure to receive good service & politeness from every business we strolled around, the areas we visited were absolutely spotless any rubbish was put into the many bins which were available, they really put the UK to shame, however Jamaica is a completely other story, we have a Jamaican shop owner in Spalding who went to visit his Grandparents for the first time in 2017 he felt unsafe & will never return, we went there in 1999 and were advised not to wander off the complex. We didn't see any security on any of the beaches again they were all spotlessly clean at one point I picked two empty beer bottles which I had drunk to return to the bar 100 yards away but these were taken from me as I was " on vacation" and it was Elvin's job to do that not mine, he put me in my place..😄

I'm with Octopus - my rates up till 31st March were :

Electric:
Unit Rate : 22.42p/kWh
Standing Charge : 45.67p/day (£166.70/year)

Gas:
Unit Rate : 7.16p/kWh
Standing Charge : 26.16p/day (£95.48/year)

Charges exclude VAT, so you've got to add on an extra 5% to get the true cost. Last month was £143, and I was away for one week. No idea what next months rates will be - tiz what it tiz.
