New Edge
« on: 27 July 2020, 22:25:09 »

Now I've changed to new Edge[from Explorer] there is a message that appears on the same line as the OOF address that says it's not secure. This doesn't happen on any other site I use.Is there something I can do to make it secure-if so what?-or is it a case of that's how it is?

Because you're not using https. I think when you first log in to the forum the re-director sends you to the non-secure http url.

Check if you are using https rather than http.

Even if you are using https, some pages may still show insecure, as some embedded pictures may be hosted on http sites.

Just to check I typed in https etc on the search bar, this brought up the forum with a picture of a lock in front of omega owners etc until I clicked on a topic when it again showed not secure.Go back to the index and the lock picture reappears and as soon as I logged on it came back up as not secure??

Probably caused by some of the images on the page being on insecure sites ... that includes images in peoples name blocks (avatars) as well as signature blocks and the actual text !!

As has been said, its likely that an embedded image - either a photo, or their avatar - is hosted on a non secure site.

Nothing really to worry about, as long as when you log in, it doesn't say it

As long as I type https etc into search bar it displays the lock symbol until I click on a topic[like this one]when it goes back to not secure, then back to the lock symbol when I go back to the index.

A very quick and dirty analysis of the page code shows there are two instances on this page of references to http://www.photobox.co.uk ....   they are insecure links (http not https) so the whole page gets the label "not secure"

The index page has no such references, as it has no images ....... so remains as secure

If you wish to check other pages ..the procedure is and I'm using the "new" Edge:

right click a blank area of the page - choose "inspect"   ( or hit ctrl+shift+I)
across the top screen that appears on the right, choose "Console" ..

You should now get a list of all the issues the software detects with the site code .... it will highlight security issues, often as a code 17 .. but sometimes with just an exclamation mark in a yellow triangle.... the narrative will, usually, read something along the lines of, but can differ:

Mixed Content: The page at 'https://www.omegaowners.com/forum/.............' was loaded over HTTPS, but requested an insecure image 'http://www.............................'. This content should also be served over HTTPS.

HTH a little

As Entwood says, pages with user generated images (photos and avatars) might get those images from non-secure (http) sites, that users upload their pictures to.

Pages with images* managed by the admin team are getting their images from secure (ie, https) locations, so the home page and section indexes etc should all show as secure, as long as you go to the https version.

*many of the maintence guides are still pointing back to an http site, its a massive task to edit every guide.
