Does anyone smell bullshit?
« on: 22 July 2021, 07:27:06 »

This article focuses on independent garages and the cost to the motorist, but I see it as another way to get old cars off the road:

Always a way to get round rules, certainly wouldn't worry too much about it

Hmm, so should I buy a genuine Audi oil filter for my car or use a reasonably priced Euro Car Parts MANN filter. Nope, I'll stick with genuine Audi to appease my warranty obligation. Oh look, it's the same filter with an extra Audi stamp on.  :)
It's not in the interest of car manufacturers to make their own parts, apart from body shells and seats, so most parts are outsourced anyway. I appreciate that they are probably referring to cheaper non OE parts but surely that's customer choice.

Yep, all now will be done to get old, internal combustion engined cars off the road. :P :P

However, in the case of our Omega's I note they are trying to get garages to fit genuine manufacturers branded parts - surely a breach of the free market rules - but even now, let alone in after 2023, getting a genuine GM/ Vx part is getting very difficult indeed so that will not work! ::) ::) ;D ;D ;)

I've never felt any need to buy parts like oil, filters, spark plugs, gaskets, belts, bearings, tyres, bulbs etc from main dealers as they're all bought in from the same manufacturers as the aftermarket. This sort of law is lobbied for by the car manufacturers to replace their falling profits, both from selling cars and servicing. It's also why their solution to any situation concerning vehicle is buy our new UltraAardvarkGsErxy Green Edition Plus model which is specifically engineered not to do that.

Just out of passing interest, your Omega's seats were made by Recaro....

If you do your own work, you won't be paying the garages mark up on the parts or their labour ::)

Although you probably won't be getting quite such a good price as they do.

Perhaps not, but you wouldn't see that saving anyway and you, as a consumer have a choice of where you buy parts from.

OE/genuine parts can be purchased for the same price as cheaper no name parts with a bit of shopping around as demonstrated by the crank sensor episode.

The only benefit to accepting parts from a garage is that they become liable for any warranty on the parts they fit ;)

Given that many garages use euroshiteparts, and euroshiteparts like to send garages Firstline branded parts, I'm all for then being forced to fit better quality parts.

My grumpy MOT tester is always amusing when I go to pick up my cars after an MOT, as he's normally ranting at ECP about why they sent him poor quality shite ;D

He doesn't. He explicitly states on ordering no <insert crap brands here> parts, but they still send him Firstline.

It rags him off, as he refuses to use some brands, so he has to wait for them to do another run to him.

I guess it doesn't help the Firstline is essentially shopping local given the proximity of their shed :-\

Presumably there isn't a viable alternative beyond main deal for him to get parts?

For any garage, there is little choice but eurtoshite (or their associated companies like AP and CAF).  TPS are obviously viable for VAG parts, and Trade Club was viable for Vauxhall.  But when you need delivery within an hour or 2 for any car, you are tied to companies in the euroshite group

After reading the article my immediate thoughts were that it is simple protectionism aimed at reducing the ability to use non EU branded parts thus quietly excluding non EU manufacturers./sources from the ring fenced market .

Charge the end user more / keep the cheap suppliers out ..........win ,win for the EU .

Not every part you need is available from a main dealer. Nor does every part supplied by ECP(or any other factor) have an unacceptable life.

And then you need to factor in the customer: you can, and probably would insist on fitting a £70 genuine crank sensor over a £35 generic one, to the point of refusing to do the job. Now consider something like an Omega wishbone, and the ridiculous price of a genuine compared to the others that are available - It's highly likely that nobody would agree to pay for the genuine one.

They would have no choice if only genuine was available.

Hmm, I once made the mistake of fitting aftermarket Delphi which lasted 5 minutes. Well the bushes did. They were OK once decent bushes were fitted.

There was an acknowledged fault with a batch of the Delphi ones. But as you say, easily sorted with decent bushes ;)
