Not starting
« on: 24 January 2007, 23:02:33 »

Hi all,
As of this morning my car won't start   :'(
When I turn they key it makes all the right sounds but never catches.
A few questions!

1. Should the EML be on while trying to start the engine or should it go out with all the other lights?

2. I have noticed a light with a spanner on coming on below my display when I start the engine for the last few days - it quickly goes off though and I can't find this in the manual. It may have come on every time but I've only just noticed it.

3. I read here somewhere that the paperclip test only works on cars pre 1999, is that correct?

Thanks for any help,
Andy

Paperclip test should work on yours, it does not work on FBW engines (Fly By Wire - 2.2, 2.6, 3.2)

Do you get any dash lights on before you crank?

Sounds like an immobiliser problem, someone who can offer more advice on that should be along soon  :y

Unless the EML is flashing, I doubt its immobiliser ;)

Do paperclip test, but I have a sneaking feeling it could be crank sensor...

My first guess would be crank sensor too, engine simply won't run if it fails and it doesn't give any warning either.

Spanner is imobiliser but only if it flashes.  Solid light - EML

Thanks for all your help, I could be confusing things here - the light which stays on is the one which looks like an engine, the new light I'd noticed is just a spanner in a circle but it's below the temp info. This may have always been there but only noticed it from a couple of days ago.

Ok, done the paperclip test and get:

135        'Check engine' lamp (fault code lamp)        Low voltage
19        RPM signal (crankshaft sensor)        Incorrect signal

Does 19 mean the crank sensor is gone or is that the one which comes up just because the engine isn't running?

Cheers,
Andy

Correct!

(BTW, a 19 can occur for a while after sensor changed due to being stored in ECU)

Right, going to try and change the sensor on Wednesday, first I need to find out which one I have. Is this a part that VX usually have in stock? I have really only 1 day to do this but first have to take the old one off and find the part number. Is it also a relatively easy job to do? I have found a how to on the "other" site with a couple of pictures but they're fairly close and I need a zoomed out one to know where to start looking  ;D
I've never done any work to a car before so I'm a bit apprehensive but hopefully I could then move on to other things.
Cheers again!

at a guess it should be 9174621 at its a late 2.0, but you can check with the engine number...

2.0 to 14194716.......pn 90458251
2.0 from 14194717.....pn as above

I hope its the one i think it is....as its a LOT cheaper

If its anything like the 2.2 is a bit fiddly but can be done ok.
Again if its in the same place as a 2.2 is rhs of engine looking from the front and down next to aircon compressor

Thanks for the help, I actually have a 2.5 V6 - it's a 2000 model so a late 2.5 - can I guarantee it's the later sensor?
