car History
« on: 03 October 2020, 14:22:06 »

Just been jotting down my car history

Interesting how the standards have gone up and down according to how poor I was at the time, the 2 new cars were bought 8 months apart because the Astra was full of faults.

Also, would never buy a new car again with the amount of money the car loses after its bought.

Way back when dinosaurs still roamed the Earth, and I was but a callow youth, I owned two plastic pigs.

The first a 600cc Regal saloon. The second a 600cc Regal Supervan.

Needless to say I rolled them both. :)

Why am I not surprised  :D

Have you driven a Joke? To be fair it was my wife's car, and not my choice.  It was a top of the range trim level with such things as a reversing camera, auto wipers and lights and leather and bottom of the range on performance.
The boot was a decent size, but back seats a bit tight for 3 adults on a 6 hour journey.
Had to swap it for a car with an autobox and an electronic hand brake due to an issue with her shoulder.  Hence the mk6 Astra excite.  A more basic spec you can not get.

The B  reg polo was shite. An unreliable piece of rubbish.  It was purchased in haste, and let us down frequently.
On the other hand, replacing the engine only took me 2 days in a single car garage. Before i sold it I drilled holes in the floor to let the rain water out. Which once froze an inch deep and gradually defrosted on my way to work.
It had zero redeeming features, and I fail to understand why they have any following by VAG fans.

You owned a Nissan Joke and think the Mk2 Polo was the worst car you ever owned ???

Re the Joke... I haven't and have no intention of ever doing so. If I were ever in the market for a clit based SUV, then I would buy a Kangoo Trekker :-X

Re the Polo, the one I had was originally a school mate's first car that my Bro bought as his first car with 180k+ on it and no MoT. It cost £100 to get MoTd and was mostly FadedDogknob red/pink and rust.

Got nearly 18 months use out of it and cost nowt more than service parts and a second hand carb. And sold for a clear profit. You wouldn't want to crash one, but there's nothing to break on it... and that's speaking as the most anti VW/Audi person you'll ever come across  ;)

I had one to commute 3 miles each way to work. Killed it dead in less than a year. Might not have been completely VW,s fault though.  :)

That was a facelift, a model change and another facelift removed from the old sheds we had :D Even VW couldn't screw up that much progress ;D

Didn't really pay a lot of attention to VW models  the wife liked the look of it and for around £6000 or thereabouts it was a reasonable buy.

I think the three least reliable were the Vectra diesel, the Seat Altea (especially as it was a brand new car) and the Granada 2.8 Ghia X  :-\ The rest were all pretty good all things considered...

Worst for me was the Cortina 2000E leaked like a sieve when it rained & the front wings were like tissue paper, best for price & reliability over the 6 years I ran it was the 2.6 CDX Omega never gave a moment of concern.

Worst car I ever owned was one I bought brand new for 1st August (1984)  Bought the Mk1 GTE Astra

List of faults includeded.

Rust in paintwork,
wax writing under the paint
headlights - condensation
Tank imploded - breather issue.
Nearly caught fire when ignition turned on (in a petrol station)
Wind noises
Paint work on wheels

The list went on to 2 x A4 pages of complaints. >:(

.

A neighbour of mine had a Sylvia Turbo back in the late seventies early eighties it was then an absolutely stunning vehicle I almost bought it from him when he changed it for a RS1600i , but decided on a Granada Ghia instead.

(1983 RWD Toyota Starlet owned by driving school, passed test after 8 lessons)
(1972 Mini Clubman estate shared with sisters written off by me)
1968 Mk2 Cortina 1600E first car Gold with black vinyl roof, scrapped due to rust
1970 Mk2 Cortina 1600E Silver low mileage one owner car which I spent a fortune on restoring then sold for a lot less than I'd spent
1980 Renault 5TL shared with family used as van by me see below, brilliant in snow, it rusted away.
1983 Mk1 Astravan 1600 petrol was rear ended by MG Metro, no headrests gave me bad whiplash, van spent 5 months waiting in bodyshop for parts to repair it.
1982 Lotus Sunbeam bought as damaged repairable sold as unfinished project with world's last new shell. I wish I had finished it.
1988 Transit van 2.0 Petrol race support vehicle, towed my racecar to Belgium twice (4 speed manual)!
1979 Porsche 911SC Sport. Owned a Porsche before I was 25, spent a fortune on engine rebuild which took well known local specialist nearly 12 months sold it before I was 30.
1989 Mk2 Astravan 1600 petrol bought new as company vehicle saw 120mph on numerous occasions right up until I sold it with 200,000 miles on it with holes in the sills needing an MOT to scrapman for his daughter.
1989 Vauxhall Nova 1.3SR Race car converted to Sport then 1.4 then 1.6 GTE. Started with 78bhp finished with 163bhp. I wish I still had it…sometimes.
1992 Rover 216 Gti Race car multiple crashes reshelled once. It was car build number 13 and green, what more can I say.
1988 Opel Manta 2.0 GTE LHD bought to do exhaust manifold development for continental customers, actually kept it for a while as run around.
1994 Mk3 Astra 2.0GSi bought to do exhaust manifold development rolled it into ditch before I did the work, it was repaired very badly by VX main dealer. Spent a fortune on decent tyres, new bushes and Koni shocks and the engine was still 10 times faster than the chassis so I sold it before I could crash it again
1968 Chevrolet Camaro bought as engineless non runner sold as race car spares project
1995 Mk3 Astravan TDi worst vehicle I have ever owned broke everytime it exceeded 85mph, porous head replaced by VX always overheated in summer afterwards.
1996 Honda Accord 2.2 Vtec. I only just remembered this one. Shocking depreciation, quite nice to drive, never used a drop of oil, lost interest after my wife tried to demolish house with it.
1999 Lotus Carlton Race car built from parts and new shell. Started with 377bhp got to 420bhp, so far….
2005 VW T5 kombivan 174TDi most useful vehicle I have owned (until the next T5), nearly the fastest too!
2001 Honda Insight 1.0 Hybrid The cleverest car I've ever owned by a huge margin, and the most economical.
2011 Toyota HiLux Invincible One of the most disappointing vehicles I have owned
2015 VW T5.1 Kombi van BiTDi 4Motion DSG current work/family/towing all-rounder
2001 Omega 3.2 MV6 got carried away at an auction, but have never regretted the experience, lovely car to drive
2001 Omega 3.2 MV6 spent too much on the first one making it too good to use every day so bought this ex GMP VIP car as a fun project
