Can anyone suggest a foot pump that.....

Pumps up big tyres with minimal effort and lasts more than 5 minutes before falling apart.

 Pump number three this year has gone tits up......utter shite despite saying RAC on it.

Bought a brass barreled one from Halfords a few years ago & it's still going strong cost about £30 I think.

My latest, which has probably been used barely five or six times, is the deluxe 'twin cylinder' jobbie . It seems to be made of a metal that has the structural strength of mashed potato.

A foot pump is always a bad idea.  Especially those Chinese ones that everyone rebrands, such as the RAC. and Michelin ones.  For some reason, the nasty ones are usually blue

A low end compressor will do the job far better, including the £50 at Aldi ones.  I also carry a 12v one for emergency, although they aren't great. But still better than a Chinese foot pump.

Trouble with most NEW stuff nowadays is that it's crap quality. If you want a foot pump then best bet would be to search for an older "new old stock" type or good used from eBay rather than a current model.or if you wanted to go down the compressor route than there are plenty of the manufacturers standard supplied models which are usually better quality than the motor shop stuff.for around £20 ish

It lives in the front room by the front door
I have the GM ciggy lighter type 12v pump in my boot in case of emergency  (in the cubby opposite the spare wheel) but i use the proper wolf compressor for everyone's tyres ,just saves so much time and faffing about

I had two of the 12v ones[one in each car I had at the time.One was a Mercedes one and the other a no name thing.The Mercedes one broke very quickly and the no name one is still going strong!

Audi comes with a free one 12v one as the spare has no air in it ........  if you blow it up it ceases to fit .....  not used it yet, my old and relaible ebay item works for most inflations !!

the one i bought from aldi is a 12v battery type. looks a bit like a drill. battery life is alright . kit comprises of the inflator, 12v battery & charger, 12v connecter with a long lead incase the battery runs out of charge. the best one that i have ever bought.

Still regularly using a GM one that I got 12 years or more ago (the type that comes with the kit of snot to 'repair' a flat), been spot on (and cheap on eBay)

There's no point buying a modern foot pump. They're all rubbish.

In the end I picked up a Dunlop Major at a vintage store. The bloke there complemented me on my choice and explained that it would look nice "upcycled" into a table lamp. I told him in no uncertain terms that it would be staying as a foot pump, the daft hipster.  A new rubber hose and a but of lube on the leather piston seal and it's better than anything you could buy today.

Yes, electric pumps a re an option too but sometimes, such as when towing or out on the airfield, something that works on human power is easier.

Talking about cheeky offers SWMBO has been after a new dining table & chairs for a while now , anyhow she spotted one on our local buy it sell it site looked really nice & cost over £3,000 new .
Went to view it today family are emigrating house is sold asking £500 for the suite I offered £375 expecting to agree around £450 but they accepted ! Less than 2 years old and immaculate result.

about 20 years ago, over a pint on Sunday afternoon, we found a Capri for sale in the Freeads. On arriving, the owner mentioned he was emigrating on Monday and the car had to go. Richard offered him £75(1/4 of the price in the ad), and we drove it away.


I reckon we could have got the car if we had taken the bloke to Gatwick for his flight

A neighbour showed me a cordless tyre inflator that his wife had bought him, can't remember the brand he'd bought it via Amazon, but there are loads to choose from that look like a rechargeable drill with a hose on and a digital read out. It worked well on my trailer tyres.

Lidl have the Parkside 20v cordless handheld air compressors with a digital readout, and selection of valve adapters in every now and then, for relatively little money. If you already have the 20v batteries and charger, then it makes them even more attractive.
Best bit is the three year warranty. Incidentally, I have used this warranty on a 240v planer which I have had for approx. 2 years 9 months, which developed a fault, and they paid for UPS to collect it and to deliver it to Germany, and less than a week later a new sealed replacement was delivered to my door. They didn't want the receipt (although I had it), just confirmation of the serial no. on the tool presumably to confirm date of manufacture.
Slightly off topic, but one of the best tools from Lidl was their Parkside 20v cordless impact driver (sub £20). Its had plenty of hard use over the years, and is still going strong, and at the moment is still under the 3 year warranty. A fantastic tool if you are into woodworking.
I am certainly an advocate of good quality tools, as they reward you with longevity of service - I still use the Dewalt 18V cordless XRP range of tools which I have had for years, but the odd certain hand tools from Parkside don't go amiss.....

The mental image of a florid breathless and full-breasted scullery maid pumping away certainly has it's appeal.

As we speak, I am trying to convince 2 of my batteries to take some electricity, but I suspect they've had it.

I'm torn between buying new batts (genuine batts are pricey), or thinking of moving to a new range.  Trouble is, I have quite a lot of the XRP type range, so I suspect it'll be Ching Chong batteries for me, and hope they last a year or 2.

Attitudes have certainly changed.

In 1972 our headmaster (none  of this nancy boy PC 'headteacher crap' back then) told us during morning assembly that he was very proud that the school had no coloured children, and he hoped to keep it that way.

Mr York was his name and he caned me more times than I care to remember.

Decent bloke, but he wouldn't last 5 minutes today before he was dismissed.

At our school, we had a Japanese kid.  If you beat him up, you'd just get a token telling off.  Land a fist on a white kid though, you really were up before the beak.

No need to ask how I discovered this  .  In my defence, I'd like to point out that I usually only did it out of self defence, and I was bullied a lot at secondary school, probably because I didn't want to partake in the hot muffin stuff (it was an all boys school)

We had a Polish lad at our secondary school who was a real nasty piece of work and a bully, I was fairly big at 13 years of age and was never really picked on by him until I tackled him while playing rugby , fortunately my father was a pretty good amateur boxer & he always insisted that I stick up for myself and showed me a few moves , he looked pretty bruised after I had finished with him in the playground needless to say my father was called into the school but he backed me to the hilt God rest his soul.

The original Dewalt NICAD batteries that powered the tools weren't of a good standard and they lost their charge very quickly and / or wouldn't charge up at all.
I replaced them with a couple of copy / Chinese NIMH batteries which have performed a lot better, but they need careful looking after and if not used , I tried to charge them once a month.
They are now not lasting as long as they did between charges, plus having smashed the case on one when it fell 6'  from where I was working >:, I have bought two Li-Ion nano type batteries (no doubt from China) plus a genuine Dewalt li-Ion nano charger for them, and the batteries have been great. Two years or so on, and both are performing very well, power the tools well even under hard use and hold their charge when not in use. They also have the useful charge level status lights. Given the tools a new lease of life!

I just ordered a chinky NiMh for it.  Toyed with one of the adapters and some Li Ion but works out expensive once you have bought batts, charger and adapter.  They don't get used that often.
