Hi all

just taken my omega out an noticed oil smoke coming from engine then smell of burnt oil coming through vents .
stopped an oil seeping from rocker an going straight on the exhaust manifold .

have done loads before . but heres the problem  , never done one on a v6 .
will look for guide in a min on here an hoping there is , as alot of parts i have to take off .
but any advice an help more than welcome .

Follow the guide to the letter, use genuine sealant and clean the breathers whilst you're at it

And of course, as per guide  Genuine GM gaskets only   I know this  goes without saying but . . . now

the OP knows for sure       Use pattern & you will be doing them again in a few weeks

Good guide in the maintenance section. Only tricky bit is getting out the lower inlet manifold, but it does come out at the right angle. Take your time over it, dig all the old O rings out of the cover, clean all the surfaces, then stick the new O rings and the new gaskets to the cam covers with grease; apply the black  sealant as instructed; carefully replace the cam covers, making sure nothing drops out; pop in the screws and torque them up.

How long have they been in dbug?  I have a small leak on drivers side (easy side), so if looking good, may be prepared to take a stab, as its no biggie if that side fails.  Passenger side is, as we know, the awkward one.

so where's the best place to buy replacement cam cover gaskets ,
you say def use oem part , is it a case vauxhall service department can get me the part or specialist

Went in around last September - probably done around 3 - 3.5K miles since then - when I get a min I'll check mileages.

Mixture of short runs (SWMBO uses it for work etc say 20 miles/day, plus a fair bit of local running about) and long fast motorway runs weekends (dog racing).

Fitted the pattern one to drivers side bank for obvious reasons

Already had a set of genuine Vx o-rings, so used those

I got pattern in at the moment also. I know the recommnded Vx only advice (not taking in to consideration dBugs current testing) but simply put I refuse to pay what Vx want*

At least it's given you the practice  for when you need to do them again

Imo the o rings genuine or pattern are not thick enough

Why, if fitted correctly they seal ok

Indeed, they sit proud of the recess they are in and hence squash down just right when clamped.

Any thicker and greater pressure would be required and then you risk stripping the thread in the alloy cam bearing caps.

The 2 lots ive replaced have never sat proud so sealing is almost non existent  I put a blob of sealant in each recess

Fully agree with Marks statement.  You only need an o-ring to sit 20thou (0.5mm) proud to effect a seal under correct torque   If there were the incorrect size why would GM sell them for that job, and why doesn't everyone's cam covers leak after fitting them?

Always used GM standard o-rings, without sealant, without subsequent leakage from the o-rings.

Are you using a pattern o-ring which may be the incorrect size, or made from a rubber incompatible with oil?
