New ex-GMP MV6 purchase
« on: 11 September 2020, 21:05:24 »

Looking forward to showing this off at Beaulieu this weekend.

Still shocked at how well it has been looked after, for an ex-service car.

Looks very clean, and tidy inside! How long ago did it come off GMP's fleet?

That's certainly shinier than my white one, although I would wager that that's never seen a reflective sticker in its life :D

MV6 seats/trim are a suspicious touch... It almost certainly didn't leave the factory with them :-\

Low odds on that wager - being black ::) :)
It was post Omega days that some Forces started livering 'non white' vehicles, mainly to enhance their resale value when sold after de-commissioning.

MV6 seats/trim are a suspicious touch... It almost certainly didn't leave the factory with them :-\

Why do you say that? It is an MV6, not a crappy 'Special'. It depends what use it had. Being black, with MV6 trim (and retaining its MV6 badging) it most likely use would have been other than 'normal' Police vehicle duties; maybe either a Staff car or Protection duties, or in some cases 'Driver Training', in which case, it would have been purchased as an MV6; the only common deletion from standard that many Forces made were the wheels. As you know from previous ownership of a ''Plod", if it was a plain vehicle on patrol duties, it wouldn't be built as an MV6 but a Special. If purchased for more specialised duties as I suggested, it would have been ordered as an MV6 in full MV6 trim.
There is a website (I can't remember which at the minute :-\) which you can input your chassis no of your Omega and it will list the full spec / options fitted to the vehicle at the factory. I did this with my Omegas, so I had a full detailed record of their original spec. And your friendly VX dealer can also supply this info if you ask the right person...

Have seen MV6 Elite and Elite MV6 on the V5 of several plod cars. Have also seen Plod owned retail cars, especially '03 builds... A side effect of TVP stock piling several May/June built cars, (most of which ended up as '04/'54/'05).

If it's a genuine MV6, fair dos, but I would be surprised. Not the same thing as impossible... Highgrove Estate had a couple of 3.2 CDX estates, for example, so there are some pretty randomly specced cars around. But they are exceptionally rare.

Special, means just that... Usually GLS interior with no sunroof and extra roof reinforcement and interior roof panels for lightbar wiring and a higher rated alternator. Options included, but not limited to: Heavy Duty springs with/without Self Levelling, Xenons, LSD, Manual/Auto, 3.0s had steel wheels with trims and 3.2s had alloys, Euroland also got the option of the full fat 2.5DTI lump.

All the other Plod gear was added by the forces themselves... It's only recently that Vauxhall started building a  'standard' police vehicle range, and mostly because they were losing sales to Volvo and BMW...

All the skid pad cars I have seen wouldn't look out of place in a stock car race :D

Driver training cars generally don't end up looking much better.

Sticker price of a 3.2 V6 Special Estate was £18,250 in 2003.

Don't tell him!!!!!!!! ;D :y ;D

I went to a BCA Preston - possibly 12+ years ago - where there were 3 black 3.2 Elite saloons from GMP up for auction direct from the Police. They were were all full Elite spec; in reasonably good condition with just the odd bit of paint, but they made strong money at the time, so I walked away. They had obviously been used for a specific purpose, not routine police work, and had been well cared for overall.
About 5 years ago, I bought a black 2.6 Elite saloon at BCA Birmingham which had been used for 12 years by the NCA. It was in pretty good order, with only a few car park dents which easily came out, and again was full Elite spec. It had a full Vauxhall history too, which was all over the UK, but complete.
I still have (although now for parts) a Reubens Red 3.2 Elite saloon which was previously owned by Lincolnshire Police and used as a Staff Officers vehicle. Lincolnshire gave me details of its history and use when I asked, and that car was in full Elite spec, with a NCDC 2015 colour sat nav. It was well maintained with the Police, but had changed hands several times since when unfortunately it had been negleted somewhat mechanically.
So the crux of it is that Forces did buy 'non white' full spec Omega MV6s and Elites for specific purposes, generally in darker colours of green, blue, red (maroon) or black, and quite often these particular cars were well looked after due to their individual use.
I personally would be very surprised if that MV6 is anything other than the stunning vehicle it appears to be.

I never said that they didn't use anything other than white Specials ???

I merely made an observation.  ::)

As for the age of the vehicle, I wasn't asking for the VIN ffs, just curious as to the age as I have a hunch that the age would confirm/disprove.

All the skid pad cars I have seen wouldn't look out of place in a stock car race :D

I found an ex Thames Valley 3.2 Estate in white in a local scrap yard several years ago. It was obviously straight off skid pan duties, as it was fitted with large rubber mudflaps that went upto waist line height on the vehicle, and was heavily caked with dried oil underneath. It was damaged on its fns corner, which eas probably ehy it had been scrapped. It still had self levelling suspension fitted.  All the underside components were totally rust free, so needless to say it was quickly stripped of its front suspension, wishbone, rear shocks and springs - all of which were genuine GM and protected by the oil coating. It appeared to have been previously a traffic patrol vehicle judging from the equipment holes in the trim.
Lancashire Police have not had a skid pan for years (perhaps down to the health and safety?), but when they did, operational cars were used at the end of their service prior to subsequent disposal. I have some great photos of Triumph 2000's razzing round Lancashires skid pan in the late 70's / early 80's....

Driver training cars generally don't end up looking much better.

Lancashire Police Driving School used to be one of the best in the UK, until the cuts started and they moved out of their wonderful Police Motor School into basically an office block and prefab garages.
In the old Motor School premises, the cars were washed and leathered off everyday after the 'run' by the students, and they were immaculate without the normal abuse that section or to a lesser extent traffic cars were put through.  The interior trim was always good as the drivers weren't carrying handcuffs, batons that caused untold damage to the interior trim getting in and out of the vehicles. They were 'driven', but not abused, so were generally a decent buy second hand. And the majority weren't white either.
Other Police Forces used to send Officers to Lancashire for Driver Training, so they had an example to set with their vehicle fleet.
The good old days.......although they only ever had one Omega,  a white 3.2 auto....

The TVP bumper cars were probably scrapped after failing to sell at WOMA, not helped by the fact that they were the only two non runners at one of several sales I visited there.

The ex Met '53 black Elite estate that Josh acquired went to a forum member, think that was originally a £5-6k car. The ad is on here, probably 2010/2011 :-\

Think Joff may still have it...

Not disputing the fact that it is obviously a very well presented car, especially in non metallic black 8)

I do however have a question...

1. When was the Facelift interior updated?
