Title: 1.6 Zaff
Post by: countrywoman on 04 April 2024, 14:16:20
Seeing how my youngest lad didnt keep his pants zipped up he now needs a 7 seater, got a text from him asking if a 2013 1.6 Zaffera was any good. Told him gutless but no worse that any of the choices for reliability . 88K he said for mileage.

Thats probably a Zafira-C (aka Zafira Tourer).  Tunnie had a couple of them and could probably state what they are like to live with.

I had a Zafira-A, and can't fault its versatility or reliability.  Despite being completely unloved by me and abused, and often left for months on end abandoned in various places, it was doggedly reliable and fairly rust free aside from front subframe that stupidly sits in damp sound deadening all its life.

We actually looked at Zaf-B's to replace it, due to its versatility, but everything around 2012 I looked at were rot boxes underneath, apart from one very cheap one that had zero documentation and I didn't trust the seller.  We were looking at diesels due to economy, and most also had the unmodified M32 gearbox that seems to have reliability issues - all 4 I test drove had the usual telltale signs of the well known bearing failure.

I thought zaf C was either 1.4T petrol or 2.0 diesel, but there may have been some crossover.

Zaf B finished on 14 plate
There was then an early "C" version which had a sort of X front styling before they changed it to the common "C" variant styling
1.6 are not motorway cars as they have low gearing, 3000 rpm at 60 mph, heavy on fuel above those speeds
1.8 B,s are a bit better at 3000 for 65mph.
I used to avaerage 38 mpg in my 1.8

So 2013 year could be a B and not the C Tourer version. Suspect it is the B as the C did not get the 1.6 engine till later.

Wife has a 2016 1.4T SE Auto and it’s perfect the school run. It’s smooth, silent and decent enough on fuel on a run. Can see 40 mpg. Suffers in town though.

Engines in the C are:

1.8 petrol
1.4T petrol
1.6 diesel (adblue)
2.0 diesel 138 bhp
2.0 diesel 165 bhp
2.0 diesel 170 bhp (adblue)

Depends what kind of driving he does, town only? Get the 1.4T.

If bigger miles, my choice is the 165bhp diesel. Has enough grunt and no adblue junk.
2.0

Mm my 1.6 is petrol

1.6T petrol was never fitted in the Zafira C in the UK. Europe had it though.

I thought this would be a B, well he is going to look at it. Needs a 7 seater as his partner has 2 girls from a previous and now they have 2 between them. Not much room for a buggy behind rear seats!

I currently have a 1.6 zafira B for sale with excellent history for £1400, so make sure they aren't overpaying! I've owned mine for the past 3yrs/30ish k. My experience is they're cheap to run and insure, not uncomfortable but yes, pretty slow. They have a few common issues that are relatively easily fixed, but can be costly if you pay a garage.

Definitely a B btw, the early C's got the 1.8 Z18XER but not the 1.6. as tunnie says, 1.6T was much later and a different beast entirely.

As for rear space, with all 7 up, the only way for a buggy is to stand it vertical and put a Bungie round the rear most headrests to hold it up. Even then it won't do a double buggy, no way.

We did all our traveling in 2/3/1 formation which left plenty of space.

May I suggest 2 bricks clouted together with his gonads in between?

I would definitely class the 2 rear seats in a Zafira as occasional use only, the Zafira is too small to be a full time 7 seater.  With 4 "little darlings" and the associated crap that has to be carried, I would start to suggest something a little larger.

As much as I was fond of my Tranny, they aren't a replacement for a car.  I was thinking of a proper car, but till a 6/7 seater :)
