Omega General Help / Re: Plenum painting
« on: 01 September 2023, 20:10:34 »
Did the engines leave Ellesmere Port with the plenum painted? Weren't the plenums the natural colour of the cast alloy?
I think the early short plenum (2.5/3.0) were painted but none of the later and long plenums were painted

Anyone considering going?

General Car Chat / Re: ULEZ
« on: 28 August 2023, 14:49:28 »
According to the online official checker for this charge my 2003, 3.2 Omega is exempt as it meets the criteria of acceptable omissions. :D :D

Quite simply if a petrol engine meets Euro 4 compliance when built it is ULEZ compliant. Same rules for all CAZ and ULEZ, nothing has changed there since their inception so yet another no news story from the press.

What the news should be reporting is how a scam such as this can be legal - If Khan really cared about the environment he would ban all so called 'polluting vehicles' from the ULEZ zone and provide a so called 'green' alternative, but. there's an opportunity to scam people out of money who have no means to meet the vehicle criteria.

Just to add insult to the situation, Westiminister City Council (and probably others) add a surcharge to park a non-ULEZ compliant car.... Not sure what they are smoking but as far as I am aware, a vehicle without an engine running (because funnily enough it's parked) doesn't produce any tailpipe emissions.

General Car Chat / Re: Minor roads in Daventry area.
« on: 26 August 2023, 19:12:03 »
Sounds very much like most everywhere. The roads are shite.
The roads in the US are just as horrendous.
Yep, always have been rough, but the suspension setup on American vehicles covers up a lot of the horrendous roads..... right up until you leave the interstate at anything approaching the speed limit and get a quick reminder how soft the springs are  ;D

Omega General Help / Re: Valve stem seals
« on: 17 August 2023, 19:09:56 »
I know the earlier 2.6 was prone to stem seals, fixed I believe on the later ones.

Wasn't fixed on the 03 2.6 I had, was only fixed when a lorry wrote it off and I bought 2x 3.2's with the insurance money and transferred the good parts  ;D

Testers discretion I believe. I think if the structure is OK and a repair can be made they might pass it, but a repair depends on where the nail is and the speed rating of the tyre if I remember correctly.

Omega General Help / Re: Engine Management Light On
« on: 08 August 2023, 23:51:30 »
There was a known fault with that pipe rubbing through from contact with the AC pipe if the spacer wasn't fitted, my first Omega suffered this which caused a slightly spongy brake pedal (but no problem pulling up the car in fairness) and diabolical fuel consumption.

You mean like this...

Aye! Mark DTM did a similar temp repair on mine until I got a new pipe. The irony is that the plastic spacer that should keep the pipes apart causes the AC Pipe to wear through after a few years!

………….
The first thing might go unnoticed until you had used the brakes. Now imagine finding out that you have no brake assistance on the M1/25/20 when the traffic ahead suddenly stopped. By the time your brain has caught up, you're in the back of the car in front. At speed. ……

That happened to me on the A30 on my way to Cornwall many years ago. Flat out in my V8 Vitesse when I noticed the traffic in the distance braking to a standstill. I braked fairly hard but then heard a pop, and the brake pedal went solid. I did manage to stop but it was tight and a scary experience.
On investigation, the brake servo chamber had rotted at the join and the vacuum had blown a hole in it.  ::)

Not sure my underwear would have survived that failure!!

Even when working SD1 brakes were always crap (I'm sure Vitesse ones were better than standard though), I have memories of getting plenty of smoke from them when stopping (eventually) from motorway speeds in my younger days :-X  ;D  I know the Met fitted different wheels so they could accommodate Jag XJS calipers which says it all really :D

Lizzie, can't say i've read every post on this thread but if not mentioned already, i'd tighten up the vac hose fitting to the plenum (17mm spanner on the inner fitting and 19mm on the outer - tighten the 19mm nut while holding the 17mm). There was a known fault with that pipe rubbing through from contact with the AC pipe if the spacer wasn't fitted, my first Omega suffered this which caused a slightly spongy brake pedal (but no problem pulling up the car in fairness) and diabolical fuel consumption.

General Car Chat / Re: Main dealer code read
« on: 07 August 2023, 19:58:04 »
Can't say i've ever used a dealer to read codes, just buy the dealer diags, or as a minimum use a generic OBDII app and a bluetooth OBDII dongle.

Understandable to use a dealer if you don't understand / have access too the diags though, but at that price it would have paid for itself in most cases.

Two new tyres on the front of the BMW. I suppose at least they aren't as expensive as the rears!  ::)

Washed the black Omega. Considered selling it for a brief moment.  :-X

General Car Chat / Re: Key refurbished
« on: 04 August 2023, 12:04:38 »
I'm always wary of sending a key off for repair and providing the address where you live / car is parked to them.

Fortunately been able to refurbish my own in the past, which reminds me, need to re-case the spare BMW key.
