Post by: BazaJT on 02 October 2017, 07:57:42
Monarch airlines have gone into administration, flights have been cancelled and rescue/repatriation flights[both terms have been used on TV news this morning]are in the air to bring home holidaymakers etc.

To a layman, pretty impressive effort to get the 100,000 back.

No doubt manna from heaven for Ryanair- spare pilots!

The problem with Ryanair isn't that there aren't enough pilots available - it's that there aren't enough pilots that are prepared to work for them. Most Ryanair pilots are on what are effectively Zero Hours Contracts, and treated as self employed. Works for young and eager crews getting their hours up, not so much for experienced captains and first officers. Also the Monarch fleet is almost all Airbus (34 A320/321 and just 1 B738), whilst Ryanair are all B738's, so would need lengthy conversion courses (which they will have to pay for themselves) before they could fly for Ryanair.

Only thing I ever consider is my definition of a Good Pilot is one that has the same number of Landings as He has TakeOffs.  ;)

One positive side affect will be the impact on their handling agent :-X

It's a shame though as they, along with Britannia, were the longest established charter airline in the UK. Some very good, experienced people work for them :'(

Hopefully Easyjet and Thomas Cook will be able to absorb many of them, as both are almost exclusively Airbus operators :-\

The engineering side should be ok as they service several airlines beyond Monarch.

People who lose money due to this are fools, as it was widely publicised this time last year that they were on sticky ground...

...so only a complete mong would book without protection.

Its a shame about the disruption of course, both to customers and staff  :'(, and it does reduce competition between the larger carriers at that end of the market.

But following the last minute cash injection last year, plus the uphill mountain of us trying to leave Europe, everyone could see the inevitable :(

A friend of ours has had to cough up 1500 euros to their hotel as their accommodation was booked via Monarch too, as if it couldn't get any worse

That is something you absolutely should not do, Monarch wont have been paying them even close to that sum....

I heard about this on the radio this morning and it seemed very odd. Surely the hotel are contracted with Monarch, not the holidaymaker? Afterall, I doubt they'd be honouring bookings FoC if you landed at your destination just as the airline went pop.

Absolutely but, as we all know, some will try it on and it would appear, make a quick buck in the process!

That though did cross my mind ::)

Been an interesting selection of 'visitors' overnight... BA have picked up several flights split between their own and a pair of Qatar A320s, whilst Wamos have had a pair of 747-400s bouncing back and forth on behalf of HiFly...

Qatar seem to do a lot of 'Picking up the Pieces' for other Airlines cock ups around the Globe.

I remember just before Xmas a few years back I missed my Connecting Flight from Frankfurt to Hong Kong on a Lufthansa Sardine Jumbo (there fault not mine), Luftwaffe put me on a Qatar flight next day as they were fully booked up till Xmas day, when they handed me the Printed Paper Work for the Qatar Flight it also had the Seat Price on it that Im guessing Lufthansa paid Qatar Airline the seat, guessing they should have torn that bit off, the Seat was for Frankfurt / Riyadh / Doha / Hong Kong and was in Total 28 Euros  :o

Qatar have a lot of spare airframes and crews at the moment due to the fact they were on the US no hand baggage list (now removed), and more importantly for short haul, they've fallen out with most of the Middle East over their alledged involvement/support for ISIS/Al Queda

I understand they're not running any of the Israel rotations though - that's a bit too politically sensitive for some reason ;D ::)

If you booked before December, then you should get your money back ;)

If booked after, and paid by credit card, then again, you should also get your money back.
