I know these ST220's are almost as old as omegas . . . but has any one on here had one of these ?
May have a chance of one from someone I know . Looks very nice in its "Performance Blue" paint & turbine looking alloys 8) 8) 3.0l V6 ::) ::)
Heard the gearboxes are a cause of constant wallet emptying ? :-\ :-\ :-\

I'm not really familiar with car, Al, but do you really want to buy an old car that's bound to have been ragged to hell?

good point Steve . . . '05 plate . .guy has had it 10 years , always garaged , always serviced , car has never wanted for anything . Can't say it has not been "Ragged to Hell" . . .but unlikely in this guys ownership . . he's a bit older than me :o :o not cheap . . but there again not that expensive ::)

I have driven an estate version.
Nice car, handles well and quite quick if you wind it up. Feels 'light' on torque though.
-
Sounds like it’s well cared for, I’d go for it :y

That puts it in a different light. If it's been looked after, it's cheap enough and you fancy it...........

Not owned an ST220, BUT, I have owned the same vintage of Mondeo, and a Jaguar S-type 3.0 V6, which has the same engine. Couple of thoughts:
- Engine is nice, not going to pull up any trees but moves along well enough. However I would guess it will be a pig to work on though. SWMBO had an x-type 2.5v6 (again, same engine, albeit smaller cc). Unless you're a double jointed proctologist, or have the hands of a 5 year old, det ready to lose the skin on your knuckles.
Second, I would take the car through a carwash and then check for damp in the rear foot wells, these had an issue with water not draining correctly from the doors (can't remember the cause, something to do with the wax they use to seal the panels and a problem with the plastic vapour barrier). The upshot is rusted rear door bottoms and damp carpets.
Normally, I'd say that the affected car would have rusted by now, but if it has genuinely been garaged, the symptoms may not be showing yet.
Beyond that, they handle pretty well and are generally a nice thing to cruise around in. I'd say go for it!

Better off with the 2.2 turbo diesel ;)
Good on fuel, cheaper to insure too
Bluefin chip it and its just as fast as the v6 :y
-
I had the 3.0 v6 in my jag. Same era. . It’s a nice engine, but more smooth than quick, and terrible on fuel even compared to omega.
Omega 3.0 steady run = 33mpg
Jag - 24mpg
Also soft valve seats and no fuel tank return so difficult to lpg
-
Ok guys thanks for replies . Fuel consumption is something to be looked at :( :( I have first refusal on this when it comes up for sale at end of March, so have time to dig a bit deeper & have a search around on the Ford forums. :y :y

Yes it's a good engine, plenty of power and torque and I get 38 mpg without trying in my Mundano. :y
I've never thought of getting it chipped though. :-\ Might look into that! :)

I suspect, following our current cars, most things seem light on torque ;D
I think the ST220 is the same 3l engine that my mate has in his Morgan? In which case, it does need revs to get it moving properly.
-
Anyone achieving greater than 25mpg (petrol) or 35mpg (diesel) from a 3l engine needs to try harder, and stop holding up the traffic ;D

Mondeos of that era were reckoned to have the best chassis in the class[possibly this continues I don't know]and were also the basis of the X-type.Ford V6 sounds better than Vx V6 on initial start up but after that the Vx V6 sounds the better imo Not really heard any horror stories about the gearboxes local Ford stealer didn't get that many in for such problems, cerainly no more than any other model.
