Title: Jaguar front splitters.
Post by: Field Marshal Dr. Opti on 23 May 2018, 18:39:39
They make the car sit low at the front and I've scraped them both. :-\

Each side is attached with 4 torx self tappers......Jaguar use 2 different sizes for some reason.

Anyway, I've removed the screws but for some reason the splitters which weigh SFA have additional support.  They are attached to the bumper with some form of stringy contact adhesive. Quite why I have no idea. :-\

Best way to separate the splitters from the bumpers so I can respray them?......any idea chaps?

Get one of the cooks sharp knifes and insert it, between bumper and splitter and slide along.

Hmmm. This may be doable BG......although the gap is very tight. :y

You might want to consider a Stanley knife if you intend to benefit from the cook's efforts :y

Just found torx self tapper number 5......hidden in an 'awkward to get at three inch recess' right at the end of the splitter.

I have them both off now. Gently slicing away the stringy adhesive as I went. :y

A quick 'smooth down' with wet and dry followed by a respray and they'll be as good as new. :y

So that when the work-shy Brummie Who's supposed to fit it does a half-arsed job, it doesn't rattle  ;D

It seems I do need some form of stringy contact adhesive along the front edge of the splitters. The fixing screws are located quite a long way back and it is easy for a gap between front edge of the splitter to develop as speed rises.

Which adhesive to use?.....

I would research this carefully, Opti, you really don't want to get adhesive over your paintwork.

That is why I am asking 'experts' such as yourself. :)

Tiger seal.  :y.............as long as you don't intend removing it again.  ;)

I was thinking something that doesn't go completely off, yet provides good adhesion. You know, a bit like the stuff that was on it.  ;D

The jaguar forum suggest Evostick.

It's stringy as f*uck but you can get it off again.

I expect it will need to come off again.

Isn't a Tiger seal a large lump of blubber that lies on the beach all day?

I don't think you should write about TB like that :o

An hour in the sack with the girl of his dreams (Shami. C) would remedy that. :)

300 calories a time. Six times a day. :)

It'd be 350 calories. She'd have to catch him first. ;D

Black Sikaflex :y

Good for 150 mph and can be removed with heat and white spirit...

Don't think I'd want to put heat anywhere near the front end of my jag.  :o

It doesn't need heat (Nor does Tiger seal). It needs a thin / sharp implement, like a wallpaper scraper tapping along the join to cut through it.
An omega boot spoiler takes about 15 minutes to remove by this method.  ;)

Tiger Seal has been mentioned on the Jaguar forum also. ....along with Sikaflex. They say it will be a bastard to remove the trim again once this stuff has 'welded' the splitter to the bumper.

Some suggest 3M VBH double sided tape.

Number plate tape?

Evostick still sounds best to me. And you can get off your head while doing it.

Back in the good old days we used butane lighter fuel. :)

Gripfill is good, flexible and cheap.  :y

You can get off your head on that too!  ;D

I can certainly tell you that 3M trim tape sticks like sh*t to a blanket.

Not that I'd know about the latter.

Not so easy to remove again though? Most things in our house have gripfill in their makeup somewhere down the line. It’s particularly good for attaching skirting board  :y

Opti, just to throw another idea in, double sided glazing tape, it’s a bit like those sticky numberplate pads but comes on a roll. Also cheap and sticks like, um, well as above.

Comes off without too much of a fight too. You can cut it in half with a knife then peel each side off separately.

I've only ever known the numberplate stuff to come on a roll, never knew it was available as pads.

A certain Scouser might be able to answer that. :)

A whole sentence without a spelling mistake, and minus the usual sixteen commas? Where's biggriffin? What have you done with him?  ;D

TBH it’s probably the same stuff in a different packet  ;D. This is the glazing tape:

Probably, but all of the trimtape I've seen is the same thickness; the glazing tape is available in a range of them.
