Some of you may remember that swmbo and Master Vamps got caught by different speed cameras in Sunderland, in two days, in his car..... ::) ::) ;)
swmbo, clean licence, got not option, 3 points and a fine.... :-X
Master Vamps got the choice of points or a speed awareness course, he had the choice, so we told him he was doing the course :) :)
My Dad was recently caught by a mobile camera on a dual, but restricted to 60MPH, he was overtaking and caught at 72MPH, this time though traveling into Stockton. He got little sympathy from me, I travel that road regularly and no point in overtaking all the cars and it becomes a single to a ra by Tesco so you never get any further really. Anyway he got the choice and is going to do the awareness course.. :) Also a different Police Force.....
SWMBO is spitting feathers because, well she is ;) ;) and she is the one with points.... :-X
How do they choose who gets a fine and who gets a choice?

I was caught doing 35 in a 30 zone so i was given the option of a speed awarenes course, guy there said if i had been caught doing 45 in a 30 it would have been points no messing , his reasoning was anyone can creep over the speed limit by a few mph , but to do 45 in a 30 was being reckless.

My neighbour had this choice.....the course cost more than the fine.....iirc course was £85.....fine was £60 plus 3 points......plus he had to take a day off work.....as the course centre was about 100miles away....so if your selfemployed.....loosing a days pay.....cost of fuel to get there.....cost of course.....cost significantly more than the fine.....but depends if can afford 3 points on your license i guess :-/

The fine should have been increased for being anywhere near Sunderland.

Absolutely :y :y unfortunately swmbo is from there, got her trained now though, and got the boys out before they were influenced too much, got Miss Vamps supporting Sunderland though :'( :'( so have to go from time to time.... :y

Typical female, avoided the question and redirected it towards Newcastle, but at least they had a draw... ::) ::) ::)

If your young...yes i agree
However i've been told by a insurance comp that 6 points or less they ignore.....i quote from the person on the other end of the phone "everyone has speeding offences" ;D "7 or more points may affect the premium"
If i only had 3 points on my license and the insurance comp wanted to hike the premium, i would change ins companies

The do-gooders saying speeding is dangerous, then only punishing with a financial penalty.
If speeding really IS dangerous, speeders should be locked up.

I got caught last year by a mobile camera and was given the option of fine or speed awareness course. As i was just over the speed limit i was given the option. I opted for the course and personally found it imformative and interesting. A couple of van drivers on the course never realised that, as a comercial vehicle drivers, the national speed limits were 10 mph less for them. The instructor, an ex police traffic inspector, believed it should be standard practice for all new drivers.

I felt that they just stated the bleeding obvious & made it clear at the start that they were right cos they said so & if you didn't agree then there was a chance that your acceptance on the course might be withdrawn. :-X
Surely it's up to the white van driver to find before hand what his limits are before he gets behind the wheel. I know the differences with & without a caravan on the back. :-?

I took the course option at £80 plus half a day given up, really just to keep a clean license, especially as I too was doing 35 in a 30 zone.
I was surprised how informative it was, even though some of the modern ideas seemed daft to me., (eg. staying in 3rd gear at all times in a 30 zone), and the practical driving side of it with an advanced driving instructor in his car was very interesting.
You also get a certificate which means you don't have to disclose anything to an insurance coy. (This was Lancashire by the way).

you often have to ask for them. I was not given one when I was caught speeding on the bike, but i wrote a grovelling letter, and they later offered me a course :)

thank god all those thieving dick turpins have got there p45's in wiltshire :y could'nt happen to a nastier bunch of c££ts.and as a ps the accident rate hasn'nt changed one iota since they have gone, proving once and for all what a money making scam it all was.

I heard something on the radio last week that despite the fact that they have now been demonstrated to be cash cows, the police authority are trying to take over the running of them and have them switched back on.Not certain it was Wiltshire, but I think it was . :-/

I did the course - we were told that it was offered to people whose behaviour could be corrected - rampant speeding = points.
The course was good and honestly presented, as explained by the leader there was no point in turning the course into a debate, just treat it as a learning opportunity.
I have found keeping in third in 30 areas works from the point of speed control, in 4th and 5th the car really wants to be travelling faster and I've stuck with this so far despite it going against the grain of being told to get up the gears at all costs for 45+ years..
