Title: Engine breather box... crucial or what?

fitting the V6 in the kit car the oil breather box is stopping the engine going back 2"

Q. Does it perform itsfunction in a way that requires the box to stay unadulterated

Q. can I simplify (re-manufacture) the box.

Q. would it still work if it was sited remotely

I'd say no problem with re-engineering it. If space is a real problem there replace it with a blanking plate and make some other provision for a crankcase breather.

Either a hose union of some sort in your blanking plate, if you can fit it in, or attach the breather elsewhere and connect it via a catch tank or a baffled box to the breathers on the plenum. As long as you don't introduce air leaks you should be fine.

Kit cars generally do low mileages between oil changes and few short journeys so providing ventilation is less critical IMHO. My Zetec just has an open breather via a catch tank.

Only thing to note with using a plate setup is that oil consumption via the breathers will increase. The breather box is designed so that the larger oil droplets fall out fo suspensiona dnr eturn to the crank case.

This could be got round by going via a remote catch tank that you empty periodicaly
