Title: Well it didn't last long (my car that is)
Post by: ScottieMV6 on 05 August 2009, 17:24:44
Posted yesterday that all was fine with my car after 3 months off the road.

Just been out today, got about 10 miles from home and started misfiring and loads of white smoke out of the exhaust. Also a very nasty smell inside the car. Had to get RAC to recover it home.

I am well and truly p*ssed off now. Just seems like problem after problem after problem. :( :( :(

Are you my doppelganger? I did exactly the same with mine, and ended up in an RAC van too!

That is why OOF exists but for those people who can't fix their cars but don't want to see them broken there is always my Omega sanctuary!

Sorry to hear you're having a run of bad luck Scottie mate......

Best wishes you get it all sorted soon and the car starts to show a bit more reliabillity in the very near future.....

I must be lucky cos we have had 2 Migs now (an X reg 2.0CD and our 2.6 MV6 now) and have had 3 years of totally trouble free motoring from them both.....

Hope it picks up for you soon buddy

Can you give any indication of the type of nasty smell. Was it an oily smell, damp water smell (if such a thing !), and did it misfire at low rev's or high revs, any other indication of something going wrong just before you finally stopped ?.

Been there, done that, got the T-shirt, etc with regards to my mig going wrong.  Don't give up, know it's dishearting at times, but with a bit of help from folks on here, maybe we can help you get it back on the road.

M.

Thanks guys.

In reply to Smegmatt - I would say it was sort of like burning coolant if that makes sense. Almost like burning oil but not quite. It misfired at low revs to start with then pretty much all the time. No other indications apart from the header tank emptied and it isn't on the floor under the car?  :(

It probably is the head gasket Im afraid. the oil coolers go due to corrosion, and the conditions that produced this corrosion can also affect the head gasket.
flushing of the system after the cooler replacement  and possible raised running temp because of a restricted radiator could of been the last straw for the gasket.
Bite the bullet and change the gaskets. the costs are minimal if you shop around for the bits, and at least you will know its right :y

Happens like that from time to time Scotty - for no reasonable explanation - like everything else however, most problems can be sorted.

Hope you get to the bottom of this one without too much difficulty :y :y :y :y

Erm..... burning coolant / burning oil does sound like the H/gasket has gone and water & oil having a meeting !!.

If you do go ahead and do the head gasket, what I would recommend (and I'm sure others will to) using genuine gaskets and seals etc.  As it would seem that it's false economy using cheaper brands.

Maybe worth asking on the globle OOF if anyone could help you out if you don't feel confident.  I'm sure there maybe someone out there that can.

Money is the problem Matt. Or rather lack of it. I would love to just pay someone to do it for me as I am not the most confident but simply don't have the funds.

I am going to try and tackle this myself, take my time and be as methodical as possible. Problem is that I only have a few hours a day to work on it due to my partners illness she can't cope with the kids on her own. :-/
