General Discussion Area / Windows 2000 Help!!!
« on: 10 July 2017, 12:35:29 »
Ok...  So I don't have an omega any more but I know there are some very clever IT people here so I thought I would ask!

I have a dedicated machine running windows 2000 and its connected to a scanner - updating it to something more recent is out of the question due to the software running on it and to be honest works just fine in any case.  However I need this connected to the network BUT clearly I don't want it connected to the internet.  is there anyway I can nobble the internet whilst keeping the intranet alive.  my router is a basic one supplied by plusnet business and I doubt it has anything in it to do the job so I think I will need to do something within windows - but what!

Any ideas please.

Thanks
Chris

you SHOULD get it changed and at the very least you will have it rebuilt with a new mech

We have a spares case that contains 90% of the tool sets that ISN'T on the shelf.  The correct procedure is to scan the the replacement part and then coupon 100% off the value, this generates the replacement item to come into store for the next person.

The only time we will need to send for the part is when it is a really obscure part of the set or its a old obsolete part not carried any longer.

All items/parts are now covered under warranty to try and prevent confusion in store over what was covered.  In theory if you walk in with a stripped rachet you should have it repaired with a new mech,  chances are you will get a new one.

Like everything in life the nicer you are to us the more likely you are to get someone who will go above and beyond to get you want you need.

Im always nice to people............      When I wont something............     For Free. ;)

Below is taken from a few years back when Halfords wouldn't replace anything without a Receipt or the Wrenches from there Tool Kits.  ;)  ;D

My large Wrench from the 150 Kit been jamming on clockwise for a while now, so decided, whilst passing my local Halfords Shop to pop it in and push my luck. No receipt with me but managed to find a orange Halfords bag in the boot, so popped the tool in the bag and in I go, goes something like this -

Me: walks in pops the bag on the counter and says "Hiya, it keeps jamming in clockwise mode"
Saturday Boy: Opens bag, takes out wrench, looks at it, "Do you have the Box for it?"
Me: "No, its from your 150 piece kit, comes with life time guarantee"
Saturday Boy: "Do you have the Kit with you"
Me: "Yes, its in the Boot, you do want me to go and get it, its just that thats faulty the rest is fine"
Saturday Boy: "No, thats fine" then starts playing with the small lever whist looking all over it again and says "Have you been using it as a Hammer?"
Me: "No, it gets used as a wrench, I use a Hammer as a Hammer, which is also in the Boot, do you want me to go and get that!"
Saturday Boy: Laughs, and then says "No, I'll go and check if we have one", walks off and ask's another Person.
Me: At this point I starting to think, now this where its all going to go wrong.
Saturday Boy: walks back "I'll have to order you one as we dont carry spares for this"
Me: "Oh, can you not give me one out of one of your Kits as I need it this weekend?"
Saturday Boy: Walks off and ask's that other person again, gets pointed elsewhere, disappears for about 3 mins then walks back with a new 150 Kit in his hand, opens it in front of me and hands me a brand new Wrench "there you go Sir"
Me: "thats Great, Thanks, and can I have my bag back please".

Love it when a plan comes together,  ;) ;) :y :y :y

And that is how it should have been.  We always split sets if we need to its easy and the tools always end up being used in some way.

Don't get me wrong I'm not painting my employer as being whiter than white.  Clearly they are not - before I started there part time (while I get my business of the ground) I hadn't set foot in a halfords since I passed my driving test.

The problem with them I think is that like a lot of large business ideas /process change and how it comes down the line is flawed.

Even staff have problems getting things sorted out from other shops ignoring ringing phones from an internal number is a classic.  You can bet ringing the outside number from a mobile will have it answered in 2 seconds.

It narks me when you here stories from people where clearly the person serving them couldn't be arsed to do the job properly.   Our old manager was of the opinion that you do what ever it takes to make it right we basically had free reign and it showed,  zero complaints in a year and full bonus collected.  It can happen that you find a decent halfords it's just quite rare

Whilst there I asked about the warranty (because my proof of purchase is for a 150 piece set) and they said the policy has now changed and if it says Halfords on it then they just exchange it. A handy thing to know I thought.
Receipt not needed, but they are now supposed to send it off and get replacement, so could be frustrating :(

I certainly am tempted and lets face it, it went once so if the fault is still present it will go pop again.

Whoooosh!

Most of all of that went over my head to be honest.  I can poke about with a multi meter and wield a soldering iron with the best of them but when it comes to understanding what the multi meter is telling me I don't really have a clue.  With the diodes I take it I can set the meter to continuity and see if I get continuity one way but not the other?

I don't really fancy poking about too much as there is the laser coil at the top of the board and that is in high KV ranges and I bet it would make my hair stand on end if the meter leads ended up in the wrong place!.

I haven't had a chance to look at it today but I would hazard a guess and say that I managed to short the cable out that is in the location of the laser tube because if what aaronjb surmises is correct about that fuse being on the output side of  things it would make sense for it to blow when I caught this lead.

I shall have a check tomorrow.

All the best
Chris

Thanks both of you.

The output side of things does make some sense as I was aligning the lenses  and tube and managed to trap one of the tube wires (not the high voltage lead) without noticing.  It was running fine like this and only went pop after moving this wire.  I will double check the insulation on the wire and go from there.

I know there are some exceedingly clever people on here so here goes.

The power supply for my laser machine went pop in a rather spectacular fashion and it looks as though the fusible link went pop.

I have a new power supply on route however I want to see if it was just a fluke that made it go bang or if its terminal.  can I replace that fuse and try again and if so what with.  I can't find anything online that resembles what it once was.

The rebel in me says just link it out with a bit of copper wire but seeing how the thing went pop I rather dread the consequences of my actions if I did that.  I also realise that its probably a hiding to nowhere but you never know and if it holds then I have a spare power supply for the future.

I have uploaded some pictures for you to have a look at.

« on: 23 March 2016, 22:11:31 »
In our store, we have rachet mech's etc on the shelf and we will swap them over free while you wait,  likewise if you break a bit and its on the shelf its swapped there and then and if its a part that is not kept we will just break open a new set and save the rest for spares.  The third party logistics company that we use are less than useful and 9 times out of 10 they don't have the bits required.

Should we do this as a store, probably not however as the only store in the entire company with zero complaints in the last 12 months it seems to work.

Like everything - its the little things that matter and how the small problems are fixed - people are quick enough to shout out when a company is rubbish (not just Halfords) but very little is ever said when they do something right.

Cheers

try a different store, failing that ring the customer services number.  The stores don't like complaints and will lose bonus over it.  Moving parts ARE covered under the life time warranty now and its the shop that is wrong.

reads a bit further"sorry product unavailable"  :o

That just means its out of stock everywhere (shops and distro centres)  normally because its a discontinued line.

I can do a corsa d bulb in about 5 minutes from opening the bonnet to closing it again - however you do get used to ripping your hands open.

I would rather change a bulb by taking the headlight out any day of the week.  Most newer Volvos/fords/land-rovers the headlights come out with a couple of stakes or at most 2 screw/bolts and makes access so much easier and the car/headlight less prone to damage.

What I will say is that all manufactures should be obliged to provide enough space around the headlight that you are able to change  the bulb by the side of the road in the peeing down rain, however they will all argue that they cant do that due to packaging etc.

that's fine.  Like I said its not really needed.  It all depends on if the person you are speaking to in the shop is old school Halfords or not.

One thing I will say is that if you have reason to complain is NOT to complain to the store as the complaint is not logged and therefore there is plenty of scope for said complaint to disappear, complain in writing to customer services or speak to them on the phone.  The complaint is sent to the shop via the area manager who will then make sure its resolved and the shop in question will get it marked against their performance figures (and ultimately bonuses).

A member of staff was claiming they now no longer need receipt on lifetime warranty stuff, but do send it off to manufacturer, who send replacement back to store. Less convenient :(

But he might have been talking 'dangle berries'.

Yup.

Depends who you speak to weather it needs a receipt or not.  The view of our shop is that its stamped Halfords and therefore it could only have come from us (OK you could have stolen it etc., but it hasn't come from Morrison's for example).

In theory if its the ratchet that is broke we have replacement ratchet innards that can be replaced on the spot, if its a damaged socket just swap them out and if all else fails split a set to get the relevant pieces.  There is a spares company who is tasked with keeping every spare part needed for anything we sell from ride on toys to individual sockets but they are a pain to deal with.

Like everything in life, there are people who are happy to help and try and others who seem to revel in making things hard.  For goodness sake its not hard to process a sale through the till and then return it to swap your bits but some don't want the hassle!

The e-mail I got was claiming discounts off TC prices. :y
How come I don't get any emails, other than the normal junk Halfords retail offers? :(

You need to be signed up to the trade club emails which is done at the point of registration.  If you pm me your card number and email address I will update your card for you tomorrow when I am in work (yes that's right I work at halfrauds/hellfrauds/hellfords etc etc)
