General Car Chat / Re: So what have you done to your car today?
« on: 03 January 2021, 16:20:11 »
One of mine had a perpetual, but very minor, oil leak from somewhere in that region, that no amount of crank seals and pressure sensors could ever fix.

In the end I concluded it must be the oil pump, which looked a bit tricky, so I ignored it and eventually scrapped it.

Mine, the original deal had gone hard so was weeping. Changed it and it did not feel like it was going on right so cranked it without coil pack connected and, as expected, leaked straight away.

Got a new one (Elring) from local motorfactors (1st replacement was a Corteco one) and did the same test, no leak.  Built it back up and ran it home and then out today to find a pool of rainbows in front of the car on the floor. Taken back apart again and the seal looks like it has possibly flipped at one point (or the spring has pinched its locating point). Either way, knackered. Did see a small groove in the crankshaft where the spring would sit so am guessing that is original locating point? Seal was put home flush to the oil pump and smeared with rubber grease when putting in. Had made a drift to fit over the crank reasonably tight so as to centre the seal when installing as well.

Have ordered a Victor Reinz seal bowl and will also price up a VX one and will try again if anyone has any advice?

Well, say I changed the seal but using the car this morning meant oil under the car when I parked up. Seal leaking again......

Managed to change the front crank seal on my one today.

One iffy-feeling cambelt idler pulley later and new belt kit fitted as well. Has only done 25k since last belt change but not worth refitting old one with that risk.

Annoyingly, first seal went in wrong (think the spring on the seal slipped) and leaked whilst cranking the car over

2003 means chain driven with hydraulic tensioner.

How quick does it turn over? Thinking maybe chain jumped as that does happen with these if left for a long time. We had one in work that had not moved for a year or so and had to tow-start it to get it going first. The tensioner could not get enough oil so the chain had just enough slack to put the timing out by about a tooth and would not hold compression but not enough to smack valves. Oil pressure solved and all was good. Not saying it is the problem, but may be worth a look.

Flexible ones will rub more than rigid ones and will also suffer from fatigue failure more quickly. A bead of silicone type product on the fitting surface will prevent most of the perceived issues of rigid mudflaps.  ;)

Quick question, what perceived issues?

You're missing the point, five miles in 13-20 minutes is no good for it, and will only serve to exaggerate the issues that you are finding. A works vehicle would suffer in exactly the same way, so wouldn't solve the issue. You would be a textbook candidate for going electric.

But, if the price of comfort is significantly more intensive maintenance then that's up to you ;)

The point of using my own car is it costs less in fuel than the BiK and other costs of using a company car, plus I have a bad back and left knee with hardly any cartilage left so driving an M4, new X7 or 7-series and manoeuvring it through traffic is annoying and borderline painful where as the Omega is comfortable and, believe it or not, quicker. Also, my no claims are on that car.

The car is not only used for short journeys, it does journeys cross country as well (just not this year).

If the cost of comfort is using a ramp in work to change the oil more frequently and clean the throttle body every 6-12 months, I can live with that.

Additionally, I refuse to pay monthly instalments on a car that are more than I paid for the current car, plus other costs

You should probably buy a Leaf if that's how you use it... ::)

But if the oil build up bothers you, just pop off one of the elbows every so often and suck it out with a hand pump ;)

May also be worth halving the oil changes.

13 minutes to work, 20 minutes or so to get home but is ideal for the journey in the form of comfort and “get out of my car” factor.

I could use one of my company cars if I wanted, I still prefer mine as it is mine, nobody else’s and I don’t have to answer to anyone if something happens to it.

Okay, if it is normal then it is not so much of a problem.

Was thinking about putting a drain in the bottom of the manifold using a sump plug to drain excess oil every so often? Problem is that the car does about 4-5 miles each way to work every day in SE London and only gets runs every so often. Oil is good quality 10w40 semi-synth and changed every 5k

Omega General Help / Oil from intake throttle body pipe
« on: 15 December 2020, 05:50:05 »
Have looked through the search facility and can not find anything particularly relevant so, question out to the masses....

I have always had oil residue coming from the intake elbow by the throttle body since I owned the car in 2013.
Breathers have been cleaned previously, small air breather hole in the manifold as well.
Car has the modified breather (flame trap box) and breather metal pipe to block removed and cleaned
Idle is good
Cam cover had been removed previously and completely cleaned out through all sections about a year ago, (they were blocked as you would expect), gasket was not leaking when removed, nor now
ISCV is not blocked
Emissions are good 0.03% CO, 14ppm HC.

Oil level only goes down due to leaking front crank seal.

Logically, this would have positive crank pressure but I can see no obvious reason unless it is so obvious I am missing it. I was under the car the other day in work and noticed that the whole bottom of the inlet manifold is soaked in oil residue so, as I like clean engine bays, this is unacceptable and needs fixing.

My old X20XEV Cavalier used to do it as well but that was sold before I could be bothered to look at it.

I have a few days off before Christmas this year (1st time in 17 years) so want to get a few jobs done on all the car.

Front crank seal being done, levels all checked and car to be gone through completely if possible (hence trip to ramp in work last weekend). Will be rechecking all of the above anyway as a matter of course) but any other thoughts or ideas are welcomed.

Great news on the pass, and the good emissions. But its usually rust that kills these, not the drivetrain.

Tell me about it.

I expected the emissions to be good as it is an X20XEV with 2.2 cats so more efficient and Inhave a “proper” Cebora industrial welder so will see what I find and then work on it during Spring or Summer when it is warmer and more light

Going to take CSR into work next weekend and see if so can find the slight oil leak on the left hand side of the engine. I suspect it is the oil level sensor plug seal so will clean that and apply some sealant for now as not in the mood to take subframes down in winter just to change an o-ring when I can happily do that in April

« on: 05 December 2020, 11:39:46 »
Well, the old hearse has been in for MOT again today, only 4.5k since last one compared to average of 6.5k per year previously.

No advisories and emission 0.03% with HC of 14. I’ll take that all day long.

Am going to take the sill extensions off over Christmas and have a look there as I think that must be getting scabby by now though.

Would be fun for them to offer the seat to anyone from any team just to see what they are like in a Mercedes.

Everyone says it is the car, well, time to put up or shut up?

Make minimal difference to Mercedes, championship already won.
