Omega General Help / 2.5 TD Dipstick Issues
« on: 28 July 2016, 08:24:52 »
The dipstick on my 2.5 TD leaks.  When I say leaks, normal running it is fine, but if I jack the car up from the drivers side, oil escapes from the joint between the dipstick tube and the sump.

Is there meant to be some sort of seal or o-ring in the hole that the dipstick tube slots into?  Because if there is, mine is worn out or missing.  If there is one, does anyone have a part number?  I'm surprised it doesn't leak when the engine is running, as surely the oil pressure would force it out?

can get you genuine Vx 10-40 on trade, craig, if you like?  :)
I could do with some.  I have trade club, but I've never used it at the local GM dealer.  Oil and filter change is definitely on my list.  Did you get my PM about me popping over next weekend?

Omega General Help / 2.5 TD EGR Valve Questions
« on: 27 July 2016, 14:39:24 »
The EGR valve on my 2.5 TD has been disconnected.  It was like this when I bought it.  Why would someone do this?  I've no idea what disconnecting it actually does, but I'd be interested to learn.

On the same subject, I saw a 2.5 TD Estate in a field at Billing the other week, the EGR valve on that had been removed and replaced with a shiny piece of straight pipe.  So obviously there's a reason for doing this, why?

Finally got the exhaust fitted last night.  Turns out that mine only had a cat and a short section of the centre box pipe still on it.  You could hardly tell as it was still fairly quiet.  Why did they bother with two silencers as well, as you really don't need them on a 2.5 TD.

Was a real struggle to get one of the old centre box pipe bolts out of the flange for the cat/downpipe, took several hours to hack it out.  New exhaust came off ebay for £52 for both sections including a fitting kit.  Although it was a UK seller, it originated from Poland, and fitted perfectly!

Next on the list will be to flush the coolant out as mine is not a healthy colour, and I want to be certain that it is before I remove the dodgy viscous fan.  Also need to test the electric fans too, as I obviously need them to work they way they should do.

Still waiting for the transmission gaskets and filter to be delivered, so that will be done soon as well, just need to get a decent quantity of ATF and crack on.

Omega General Help / Re: This one is a manual

I quite like the excitement of buying cars online.  I very rarely go and see the car first, as most cars that I buy are at the lower end of the market so travelling anything but a few miles to see a car that's only worth a few quid is pointless.  I usually ask as many questions as possible beforehand though, and I usually get a good feel as to whether the car is worthwhile or not.

Omega General Help / Re: Air con fans
« on: 25 July 2016, 07:27:39 »
Very useful, thank you.  I'll get round to it one day.  Still battling with my exhaust at the moment, or lack of exhaust.  Snapped bolt in the downpipe to centrebox clamp.  My TD has been running with no silencers since I got it, you can hardly tell the difference to be honest.

Do the air con fans also cut in if the engine temp rises too high, regardless of whether the air-con is switched on?
Yes
Excellent!  I still haven't got round to ditching my dodgy viscous fan yet.  I want to give the rad a good flush before I do.  I also want to test the fans to make sure they work, I was going to find the temp sensor, unplug it and bridge the connector, unless there's a better way?

I went too, just for a few hours on the Sunday.  Didn't take my car, rocked up in a mates Lotus Carlton.  It's been a few years since I last went, seemed a little quieter than normal but I still had a thoroughly good day!

Just like to say thanks to tigers_gonads for his help, I now have a much better key fob than I had before, it even still has the little symbols on the rubber buttons!

So now I have a fully working fob.  I've even discovered how to close the windows and sunroof from the fob too (press and hold the close button), and how to deadlock the doors (press close button once to lock doors, and again to deadlock).

Happy days!  ;D

General Car Chat / Re: How long have you had your Omega?
« on: 06 July 2016, 10:33:42 »
My Omega B history has been short, so far.

First one was in 2010, bought a scruffy PFL manual 2.5 TD saloon.  Didn't like it, always felt that it was gutless at low speeds, but it absolutely flew on the motorway.  Only had it for a few months then scrapped.

Second one was a FL 2.5 CDX Saloon that had be retrofitted with a 2.3TD engine from a Carlton (Omega A), coupled to a Monza 4-speed auto gearbox.  The previous owner did all of the work, and almost everything was made to work (including the air-con and cruise control).  Sadly, the engine ate it's own timing chain guide within weeks of buying the car.  I parked it up for a few months and had a go at replacing the guide.  Got everything unbolted and bolted back together, sadly I couldn't get the engine to run for the life of me.  It probably only wanted timing up properly.  Ended up being scrapped as I'd just crashed my other car and desperately needed something for work, and scrap price then was still fairly good.  Shame as this was a really interesting and quirky car that drove well and was tidy too.

Current Omega is a PFL 2.5 TD CDX Auto Estate.  Scruffy cosmetically but, from what I've seen so far, solid in the right places.  Had it about a month, no plans to get rid as it's my only car and I quite like wafting about in it.

Prior to the Omega B's, I had multiple Carltons/Senators and Monzas.

Haynes has a comprehensive wiring diagram for both pre and mid Facelift... :y
Does anyone  have one to hand? I've managed to work out which pins on the mfd relate to which bits of wire where they've been cut, and labelled them. Just need to know which ones they relate to on the radio connector now

88
MID -

Pin 7    Grey/Yellow stripe - Instrument Illumination (dimmer controled)
Pin 8    Red/Grey Stripe - Radio (aerial power feed / Radio on indication)
Pin 9    Brown/White Stripe - Radio Serial Interface
Pin10   Brown/White Stripe - Radio Serial Interface
Pin11   Brown/White Stripe - Radio Serial Interface
Pin12   Blue/red stripe - Speed signal (from ABS controller)
Pin14   Brown/White Stripe - To pin 8 of diag connector (to support programming)
Cheers for that, but I'm not sure that it will help much.  Which of the brown/white "Radio Serial Interface" wires is which.  I presume its pins 9, 10 and 11 that need to connect to 17, 18 and 22 at the radio connector end, but which connects to which?

89
the only wires behind the dash go to the mfd, the speedo has its own fixed connector block
So it should be fairly easy to find the wires, but is there anything on the back of the MFD that tells me which one is which?  Or a diagram?  I have the wiring diagram for the radio connector block....

I'm assuming its numbers 17, 18, 19 and 22 that lead to the MFD, but how do I know which is which at the MFD end, since they are all the same colour?  I need a diagram of some sort if anyone has one?

The search button is your friend  :D

Pop the centre vents out, remove the two screws (close off the vent so they dont get lost in the pipes) then lift off the vent face,
there should be a single screw left to take out. next remove the steering coloumn cowl and there should be a screw to remove.

the clocks should lift out from the left and slide, Do not have your key in the ignition
Useful information, thanks.  Have found an old post wwith pictures, although it sounds a lot easier that I was expecting!

Next question....

By gaining access to the back of the dash display, am I likely to find what I'm looking for?  I could really do with a diagram of the wires that lead to the dash unit..  I'm basically looking for the ones that communicate with the radio.  I don't know how many (if any) of the severed brown/white coloured wires in my car are the correct ones that feed info between the dash display and the radio???
