Omega General Help / Heater problems.
« on: 19 March 2013, 13:39:44 »
Just got a call from SWMBO, she drove to Aberdeen from Forfar last night to a concert, on the way there all was fine but in the snow on the way back she said the 'heating packed in' Only blowing cold air! Not very nice driving back in the snow having to switch on cold air to clear the screen then switch off again as it was bl00dy freezing.
So I'm thousands of miles away (again) in Singapore and haven't got a scooby.

Can somebody/anybody throw in some possible causes please.

97 2.5TD elite estate.

Cheers

Omega General Help / Leaking #1 injector(diesel)
« on: 17 February 2013, 17:43:14 »
Thought I was using a bit much fuel on the run to Rosyth yesterday. Whipped off the cover and saw a pool of liquid around #1 injector, confirmed it was fuel, started her up and. There are bubbles coming from around the base.
I can confirm it is not the leak off pipes as they were all renewed July last year.
So, do I go in with my 27mm deep socket and tighten up or should I get new washer fitted?

My main problem is I fly back home to Spain on Tuesday so not a lot of time to get this sorted....... I might just pop it into the local spanner shop.... Decisions, decisions.

Omega General Help / Windscreen wiper arms
« on: 31 October 2012, 19:19:41 »
Does anyone know for certain whether the wiper arms from an Omega B fit the Omega A.

On my elite estate they hinge further 'up' the arm meaning they clear the bonnet when lifted when they are parked for changing blades.
On my CDX (carlton) estate they hinge at the point just above the nut and do not clear the bonnet when in the parked position, you have to switch them on and turn off the ignition when they are straight up to change the blades.

If they are the same spindle mounting then I feel it would be a useful upgrade to my estate over here. I seem to change blades over here more frequently as they tend to perish rather quickly in the sun and from not being used.

General Car Chat / Carlton 2.6 Estate fuel pump problems
« on: 23 October 2012, 18:02:49 »
OK, can somebody please help me to understand the relationship between the Fuel Pump relay, ignition and 12v at the pump.
I have done the bridge on the FPR socket and get a clear 12v at the pump which proves the wiring is OK. Bought new FPR over here from the Opel dealer after reading the hundreds of posts about this fabled bit of kit.

What I would like to know is, when can I expect to see 12v at the pump connection? Should it be with just ignition on or should it be when engine is cranking?
If it should be when ignition is on but not cranking engine what else do I need to look at?

I guess one of the answers will be in the form of a question, have you done the blink test, well no, not yet, but I will now, well not tonight but tomorrow and see what it comes up with.

Just wanting to pose the question first to see if any of the electrickery genuises have an instant solution.

Cheers

Also posted on ABS and Total carlton to get as many answers as possible.

Omega General Help / Job times and rough cost
« on: 15 October 2012, 14:14:46 »
Hello, anyone got a copy of TIS where they can tell me the job times for fitting drop links and new track rod ends.
It would seem that the main dealer in Forfar are going to take two days!!
That seems a bit excessive to me. SWMBO took the car in this morning at 09:30 and has been told it will not be ready until tomorrow night!

There must a time for these jobs..if there is and it's printable could someone possibly send me a copy so I can wave it in their face when I get back to the UK.

Thanks in advance

Jon

After discovering the wires to the high level brake light had been cut???!!! Reconnected and found that only 4 of the LED's work! (that's probably why they were cut!)
Does any one have a known good one for sale?
It's from a 97 elite estate with an irmscher spoiler.

Omega General Help / Service fluids amounts (capacity)
« on: 01 August 2012, 08:49:24 »
This has probably been answered somewhere else but I couldn't find it on the search.
I am at work in Malaysia (again) so have no means of accessing mundane information such as , how much oil, coolant, brake fluid I need to purchase.

The car in question is the 2.5TD elite estate. I have just set up a trade club account with the local garage, now I need to order the correct quantity of service parts to make the big savings. I'm getting them to carry out a full service as I don't really know the history over the last couple of years before I bought it and that's me owned it for just over a year now.
I am going to have to get SWMBO to take the car in but I will (hopefully) have purchased all the parts required first so it will not be a case of, sorry sir, we need to order that in!

So could somebody please help me with quantities of said items so I don't go buying too little or too much.

I need Oil (10-40 Semi synth) for a complete change
Brake fluid for a complete change
Coolant for a complete change
Not sure about manual box fluid change...it doesn't feel as though it needs it.

I think that's it fluids wise, if anyone knows any better please let me know, I think I have driven it a total of 1500 miles myself since buying it. SWMBO has put about 3k on though!

Thanks in advance chaps/chapesses

General Discussion Area / DVT
« on: 30 June 2012, 22:04:15 »
Got a bit of a scare today, after my last long haul flight (thursday)I had a bit of a cramp type pain in me left calf, high up just below the back of the knee.

Now those that know me will know I keep meself fit, running, hill walking, mountain biking, swimming and such like so I never thought much of it until last night when it wasn't getting any better.

Uppermost in my mind has been DVT, one of our guys lost his foot last year to that and just recently the company had changed my flights back to spain from going via Dubia/Madrid (which meant 2, 7 hour flights with a good break in between to go walking about) to going KL to Frankfurt then back down to Madrid ( single 14 hour flight)

Decided to pop into the local hospital A & E (we don't have a GP here) and after blood and ultrasound tests they confirmed I had thrombosis in that leg, luckily it was not in a major vein only a minor one..... now on a course of 10 doses of heparin and ibuprofen 600's for 8 days having to wear a pressure bandage then go back in 10 days for confirmation the clot has broken up.

I'm not one for complaining or griping about ailments, in fact I hate going to hospital, even one's that understand what your saying! But just thinking what might have been, had I not thought about DVT and just thought I had pulled a muscle......

Just goes to show that even those fortunate enough to be healthy and fit cannot escape these things!

General Car Chat / I hate tyre depots
« on: 18 June 2012, 22:42:49 »
 >:( >:( >:( Today started badly and got worse.

Grating noise coming from rear was due to worn brake pad, easy enough I thought, pop the wheel off, new pads, check over the handbrake shoes as well, jobs a goodun!

Yeah? No!  Took the plastic cover off the locking wheel bolt only to find the holes elongated and the key only had two bent pins.
Right, chisel off the collar, bash on an 18mm socket and away you go...... now remember I am at my son's place and have limited resources i.e. No 18mm socket! Right up to the local garage to get the offending bolt removed and get the other side at the same time, duly done at no charge (thanks Matt) so back down the road, offside wheel off, pads out, brake fluid reservoir cap off, rag around the neck and push the pistons back in, new pads in with a little copper grease. Job 1/2 done
Get to the other side, 2 bolts loosened, 2 bolts tight, standing on a 2 ft breaker and the 1/2" drive snapped.... Time was getting on, in fact it was just past 5.30... local garage shut, all I had left was a T bar, all of 8"!

I had to admit defeat, the car was needed for urgent granddaughter transport. Put a new locking bolt on, tightened up the two loose bolts as best I could, standing on the end of that 8" T bar should be enough.

Problem is I need, no I have to be at Edinburgh airport for a 6am flight back to work so no can do anything about the brake pad situation.... It 'feels' OK and I have told SWMBO that Matt will have to replace the pads on the other side tomorrow when she gets back....  shouldn't be a problem for that sort of distance, should it?

The upshot is, I need 4 new locking wheel bolts...or do I. I reckon the theft of alloy wheels has lessened dramatically since more cars are getting them as standard, I mean who wants to nick a set of standard Omega alloys nowadays??

It would appear that the last time this was at a tyre depot, they used a windy gun on full chat. I have never been defeated by tight nuts before... As for the locking wheel bolts, I know they were the crappy 3 pin design but even so to have elongated the holes and broken and bent the pins shows a complete disregard for somebody else's property, don't you think?

Omega General Help / 'Oil lack' again
« on: 16 June 2012, 15:18:05 »
So, after reading as many posts as I could on the subject, I have ascertained that the sensor lives inside the sump on a 2.5 TD yes? Could somebody please confirm for me?
Is it a big job?
Is it worth it? (how much is that sensor?)
We check the oil regularly and it has not strayed below the 1/2 way mark at all in the last 6 months since the warning first showed.
I am just now going to top up with 1 ltr just to see if that makes a difference.
I see in other posts that the problem went away after an oil change. This is due in the next couple of months so will see then.

Omega General Help / always problems!
« on: 16 June 2012, 13:09:53 »
Today I fancied having the back wheel off to see what is causing the grating noise, I suspect handbrake shoe.... however after getting the car into the rather difficult garage I found that the locking wheel bolt key was gubbed. (I have never used it yet) it only has 2 of the three pins and the two remaining are at odd angles.....me thinks the last use was with a windy gun set far too high. I only have a limited time here in Scotland and the dealers parts dept. is now closed as is the local garage! Problem is the village is not full of saturday car buffs so the chances of finding another locking key are pretty slim!
I am also going to fit the new coolant bottle so I should be able to accomplish one thing today! Mind you I need two people for that as the bonnet catch is sticking! Never ending!

BTW I have read all the posts about getting the old locking bolt off, the problem here is the shortage of tools in my lads garage and I don't want to leave him without a required part.

So it's off to the search again to check on stuck bonnet remedies.

Omega General Help / Insurance renewal and other things.
« on: 29 March 2012, 11:05:52 »
I had my renewal notice through while I was in Scotland, £198 and some pennies.
I went onto the comparison websites and the best I got for exactly the same level of insurance was £148 and pennies so I phoned my present company giving them the chance to match or better, they couldn't so no loyalty from me, funny thing is both companies are brokers for BISL Ltd!

The other thing is, when I went into the garage that is changing the #4 injector they informed me the fuel filter was full of petrol!!!! They had kept it after changing it and showed me.....it was! So at some point somebody had obviously filled it with petrol, well probably not filled but some had gone in at some point.
Now I know it wasn't me, I have made that mistake in the past and am always really careful about this. SWMBO also is very careful as it was her Zafira I filled (from almost empty)!
How the hell did this engine keep running???
Matt, my garage man did explain that this could have been the problem with the leak off pipes as they don't like petrol and tend to go a bit soft once contaminated and also could have contributed to the injector failure and the problem with cutting out and slightly difficult to start in January.
What to other OOF'ers think about this? Are they pulling my plonker or what?

Omega General Help / Poorly 2.5TD
« on: 28 February 2012, 20:43:38 »
Just on the phone to SWMBO and she is telling me of a problem!
The old problem with the leak off pipes reared its ugly head again.
That was sorted with new rubber (again) then she was driving from Dundee
back to Arbroath when it cut out completely, admittedly it was below the
magic 20l mark on the gauge. Got her started again and went to fill up,
wouldn't start again... did eventually, she got back to Letham, parked
up, went to start again about 30 mins later and again failed to start first time
SWMBO is very good at waiting for the glow plug light to extinguish before so it's not that
(as far as I'm aware) so I was thinking....air in the fuel system? Somehow?

As I (as usual) am thousands of miles away and SWMBO is not going to be able to understand the paperclip
test for fault codes, I have suggested to leave it overnight. Go back in the morning, see if she starts then slowly
bring the revs up, SWMBO was saying there is a reluctance to go over 2500 rpm???? So I told her to take the revs up to
4000 and hold it there for a while see if there is anything like a misfire or anything else strange.

Don't suppose there are any OOFers in the area that might be able to help, if not then it will be off to the local garage
to see what, if any, faults there are showing.

Always happens when I'm away, bloody typical.

Oh and it's Letham by Forfar if anyone can possibly help out.

Cheers

Jon

PS, it's no good suggesting any fault finding.... SWMBO loves driving the car...... but that's it!

General Discussion Area / Xbox, Wii, PS2/3 whatever?
« on: 17 February 2012, 17:29:24 »
Seeing as some of the members have these bits of equipment I was wondering if they would be able to give me the benefit of their experience.
I have never, and I mean never, had a gaming console of any kind ever.... always too busy doing things to stop and do things if you know what I mean.

We have bought a new telly and want to get the best from it including a something. I have seen adverts for all but am totally undecided as to the merits or shortcomings of each piece of equipment.
I would like it for, sorry, we would like it for things like 'Zumba' for SWMBO and a sport package thing for moi, where you are interactive with it to work up a sweat sort of thing.

I've heard some of the activities can be quite mirth making when attempted for the first few times and can go down quite well when entertaining guests for dinner (if they were so inclined)

Now that we have the house finished to a nice standard we are beginning to invite people over. Previously we were always going to 'theirs' and now have the chance to pay them back for their hospitality!
