deep rumble from diff at high speed?

Hello

Was in Germany this holiday, and drove 170kph(about 105MPH) on the autobahn and noted a deep rumble coming from what I think was the diff, is this normal?
Car was also shaking pretty good at that speed.

No not normal. Could be anything at the rear but worth checking dif fluid level as a starter for 10? As the guide :y

Rumble could be anything from a tyre defect or imbalance to wheel bearing/drive shaft/prop shaft/diff/ exhaust. Loose bumper. Wheel arch liner. ...

Never been to Germany so never on autobahn,but daft as it sounds[and probably is] could it just be from a change in road surfacing material?Round here we have the M180 and the surface changes in places from tarmac to rippled concrete and the change in road noise is very very noticeable[DBG can probably confirm this?]

Hmm,yes true.Another thought could it be prop shaft related if it's only happening at or above a certain speed?Just throwing ideas in the air and am prepared to be shot down if I'm talking dangle berries.

It was definitely not road noise, and I don't think it was the exhaust either as that was much quieter.
To me there was a drone/rumble sound coming from the center of the car at the rear

Can confirm that indeed, the road surface (on the M180 round our way, which is dire) does play havoc with internal cabin comfort. Sounds silly, but don't foget that even an open ski hatch/load-through facility can allow noise to pass from the boot to the cabin, and give the impression of excessive rear-end noise. I know this is grandma sucking eggs territory, but just thought I'd mention it.

To me it sounds as if you've a bearing on its way out, but of course worth trying everything else first, before starting the worst job there in on an Omega.  :)

In that case I wouldn't rule out the beginnings of a rear wheel bearing problem, can be common on Estates, they can start off intermittently making a very quiet rumble at certain speeds / road surfaces before becoming a noisier more apparent issue.

Should I then just check the diff fluid and leave it at that, and see if it worsens in the future?  :P
Or would there be play in the bearings if they are on their way?
