Removed diff back cover this afternoon, whilst replacing the rear springs as access was good and am convinced had aslight leak from the bottom bolt on cover plate.

All cleaned up ready to refit in the morning but have a question.

Is it better putting instant gasket sealant onto the face plate of the diff and fitting the cover dry...or leaving the diff face dry and putting the gasket sealant onto the faceplate.

Cant see it matters either way but thought there was a right and wrong way to approach this job.

Umm !  not sure there is a right & a wrong to this Andrew.  But IMO   . . . . which does not count for much  .  . it must be easier to apply the sealant to the face plate (off of the car ) & there by getting a nice even spread of goo onto it . Rather than be stuggling to apply the sealant from underneath & onto the diff itself .
Just my opimion like

Whilst you have the plate off, can you do me a favour.

Take a few pics, particularly with respect to the bottom bolt holes as one of them is cast such that if you drilled through it then it would create an excellent diff oil drain.......trouble is I cant remember which and have no photos!

Refilled with SAE90 and all up to level.Curious to know if it will make what is already a really smooth drive any better

They take 1 and a bit litres from memory, I always advise using the LSD compatible oils as the friction modifiers seem to help the pinion seal longevity.

I managed to get just over 1 ltr of SAE 90 in the diff.Bought 2  x 1 ltr bottles as you can never fully empty them given the limited access and inability to get the bottle to fully drain so have about 900ml left.

I used Millers Classic Differential Oil SAE 90 Hypoid/API GLS  which I had read was compatible with the std diff .

That would help a great deal  makes you wonder why they didnt do that in the first place or were they expecting the car to fall to bits before it ever needed changing

It could have been worse, they could have ommited a drain plug on the gearbox. That would be really inconvenient.
