D.A.B aerial
« on: 12 April 2011, 13:41:03 »

Just a question ,guys.

My original dab jvc Hal3 aerial suffered badly in the snow last year and ended up snapping and being boddged back with glue.

On advise I have now replaced the entire fitting with new Heirschman dab aerial, which I must say looks pretty smart.

I have gone down the route of a Highway dab unit which is then frequency linked to the original factory bose unit and the sound quality is very good.

When I fitted this new aerial it had a dab/fm and a 12v wire from the base which I understood required connecting to an ignition feed supply. This I did and conneted all up and switched on..perfect reception and nice tidy fit.

Now just out of curiosity I disconnected the 12v feed expecting the entire thing to switch off or have poor reception. To my surprise it still worked to the same level and standard as before I had the 12v connected.

What therefore is the purpose on the need for 12v to these aerials or is it just that with the Highway unit no such connection is needed ?

The aerial will have a small amplifier inside that helps to maintain signal strength on the poorer signals

Thanks for info,Dave.

Thought it must have some use running the extra bit of wiring,so will see how it works over the next week or so.

What dave said. What's the signal strength generally like with dab in a moving car?

Just install it correctly with the wire connected and be done with it.
