General Discussion Area / Lock down , how does it work?
« on: 01 February 2020, 23:59:46 »
US and Australia are limiting entry.

Whole cities in China are locked down.

How does that work apart from people just stay home.

If lock down came to a town/city near you, how do you keep getting water, food, electric, gas? How do you pay for it? There are so many issues that will arise after only a few weeks.

Anyone know?

Might just be a getting older thing.

Periodically our TV flashes up a message saying it is going to switch off in 60 seconds unless you press OK.  No pattern to it and cant figure out why even with google.

Lets listen to some BBC radio as we drive along. How hard can it be to get it up on the app and bluetooth it to the in car radio.? After all U2 automatically starts playing whenever my mobile gets in the car.

I get out of the running car to let the dog out. Can’t get the tailgate open. Try various random sequences and success. Other days do same process and tailgate opens fine.

Not looking for solutions, just highlighting what must be a universal problem

I used to joke that one day we will get up and nothing will work because the tech doesn’t recognise you. I am thinking that it is all downhill for older people as we understand less and less how anything works. And either waste time trying to fix things that aren’t right OR just put up with stuff not working like my Dad does.

Anyone else driven mad by stuff that doesnt work as it should.?

General Discussion Area / Fuel prices down?
« on: 31 January 2020, 22:19:25 »
Gone down here in Euroland.

Is it going down in the UK?

Could it be usage has dropped in China due to lock down? More price drops to come with a glut?

Slight snag reported in Spanish press today re Lewis / Mercedes negotiations.

Seems like all the star drivers have signed with the big teams apart from Mercedes. So Lewis has asked for circa 13 million more for a four year contract thus costing 55 million euros ( a form of currency equal to about 48 million squids).  Lets hope they pay up rather than taking a cheap newcomer of which there are plenty in the wings...... Do they need a star driver?  Methinks yes :y

Footnote. Once Kimi goes, Lewis will be the oldest driver. So a four year contract may just see him out and Eight titles to his name. Leclerc  Charles will win one of the four.

Hats off to the Chinese for their lockdown.

I thought the technology that showed the temperature of individuals in a crowd was impressive.

I take my hat off to the Frenchies. Macron organises lifting pension age from 62 to 64 and the protests go on in the streets for weeks . Public transport is at a standstill. Macron cannot even go to the theatre without protesters breaking in.

In Britain our government says it is going up from 65 ( 60 if you were a woman) to 67 and we say OK and moan a bit over a pint ( can only afford one) in the local pub. Oh and our state pension is the worst in Europe .

Grapevine reveals Rota and moron de la Frontera having largest build up of USA personnel , kit etc since Gulf War 2003.

USA did negotiate in December to increase military presence in Spain. Coincidence? Storm in a tea cup?

My concern is the Iran nuclear deal is now dead even though the EU hoped it wasn’t.

Good on him, he is shaking up the civil servants that run the UK government.

Of course the media just concentrate on the “ weirdo” aspect .

General Discussion Area / PIR faulty
« on: 23 December 2019, 09:18:14 »
There is always something.

We have a 500watt outside light with PIR that started playing up. Wouldn't switch on even if you waved your arms around but when it did come on , it stayed on all night every night.

So off to our equivalent of B&Q. 24 euros bought their most powerful LED PIR. Same manufacturer ( the well known brand Yonkers!).

Replaced it and was impressed with the improved cable termination. The old unit PIRcover disintegrated as it was gently put on the work bench. Power back on and wait for dark .  You guessed on it comes and stays on all night.  Next evening Up the ladder and adjust the settings. Ominous fizzing sound. No different came on at dusk and tripped the consumer unit.

So disconnect  and next day attach to a more convenient location and a cable with a plug. No tripping of consumer unit but no matter what you do with the three controls, it is on and stays on the minute you connect to power.

Next step is to take it back once Xmas has died down.  The obvious thing to do would be to get my money back and try a different marque from elsewhere but I will buy another identical one.

The joys of simple DIY.......

General Discussion Area / Free trade deal
« on: 17 December 2019, 18:12:13 »
Anyone got a view on how the trade deal with our European friends is going to pan out?

Free trade like we have now? It would make sense especially for Germany and Spain. Similarly for Ireland. It will keep things sweet.

However surely there will be caveats  to cover scenarios like products Britain creates in the future cheaper as a result of trade deals struck elsewhere.  A couple of poor made up examples:

Cars made with cheap but  quality Chinese steel.

Chicken pies made with cheap chlorine washed chicken from our USA friends.

Anyone got any of these?

Commemorative coins minted in their millions and avidly bought and tucked away.

Still worth a fiver but has anyone ever managed to cash any in?
