Hi,

I need five Aluminium electrolytic capacitors to fix an old DVD player.  Now maplins is no more, I can't seem to find anywhere to get them without paying more than 3x the cost in delivery.

All I need is 2 680uf 6.3v, 2 1500uf 16v and 1 680uf 10v.

Anyone know of a good source near to Milton Keynes area?

A lot of local suppliers have shut down over the years, but try CPC (Farnell) RS Componenents and the the obvious EB  & Amzon if you cant get local.

Yeah, I can get them from both CPC and RS, but what should be about £3 suddenly turns into £20, and as this is the power supply, I don't know if the rest of the device will work, and can't test any of it without the power.  Not sure I want to spend £20 to see if it works, I could go and buy one for £25!

I thought it would be a fun project on the cheap, seems like not.

Do you pass an RS store?  As you can just pick up.  Probably Watford to Nuneaton for you, depending which way the A5 takes you

Thanks for all the replies,  especially LC0112G for the kind offer.

I managed to find an ebay seller with a reasonable shipping fee, ordered the 5, well 15 (they are in packs of 5!) delivered for £7, so worth the gamble.

Just hope after all this faff, it is just the blown caps and not something further down the line

Capacitors - particularly Electrolytics - are funny beggars. There are lots of other parameters other than capacitance and voltage that matter - things like ESR and AC cycle current. If at all possible, try to look up the exact specs for the brand of capacitor you are replacing, and use one that matches those specs as closely as possible - ideally the same brand.

Not all 680uF 6V3 caps are equal, and going for the cheapest you can find is rarely a good idea.

for the £7 spent its worth an evenings fun swapping the caps and seeing what happens.  i assume ( other than esr testing ) they had bulged tops which is what led you to them in the first place.

Yep, bulging and leaking in some of them.  Only have a multi-meter to diagnose, so hoping basics is all it is.  It was sat under the TV switched on for years, so likely just well over their expected lifecycle. PSU board looks in good condition other than that, and mercifully, it is well spaced out, so should be easy to desolder the old ones without reflowing other bits
