Title: Breakdown Cover . . . again
Post by: Mister Rog on 29 March 2018, 15:29:33

So, I've been with the AA for ages, getting on for 40 years ! Renewal time is looming, £218 for me and the Mrs including Relay.

Eversure Insurance use "Auto-Rescue Logistics (ARL)" who in turn use "Recoverme". All a bit convoluted, but they are quoting me £72.16 INCLUDING European cover !

http://www.autorescuelogistics.co.uk/

http://www.recover-me.uk/

There MUST be a catch . . . . anyone know what it is ? Maybe as simple as crap service ? But, that's a big saving.

Time to re-negotiate. :)

It's not a crap service. It's a service that barely exists, and you have to argue like opps to get that.

www.rescuemycar.com are pretty good for a cheapy rescue service IMO.   :)

I've called them out a few times over the years and they've always had someone with me within an hour and once relayed me home from the Rhondda Valleys with no arguments or quibbling!  :y

Their premiums are dirt cheap, but you pay an excess if you call them out.  ;)

The AA cover will be for the person no matter what vehicle you are in (exept HGV)
Other cover will be on a specific vehicle only IIRC

All breakdown quote cheap for first year, then bump up renewal.

If you like the AA, and use the additional features, then call up to cancel, and say you are not willing to pay more than £100, and see where you go from there.

Obviously, if they say no, they proceed with cancellation.

We pay £120 a year for both cars. Home start, roadside recovery, onward travel, hotel accommodation, the works. Plus comprehensive travel insurance.  ::)

Make sure there is not one offered through your bank. For example I pay £13 per month for an upgraded bank account which pays interest up to £2500, gives me full breakdown cover, and 12 months world wide travel insurance. :y

Yeah....I think that clue was in my post above.  ;D

I get ours through bank account as well, along with travel insurance. Worth a look for basic cover  :y

I pay a bit more directly now, to upgrade to full relay so MrsT could be taken home with kids if issues.

My bank only offers a car based policy, not a person based policy...   ...which is unsuitable for us, as she could be using any of the 3 cars, hence we buy a separate policy.

Its just renewed, I think it was about £100 for the pair of us, including relay but not homestart. I did shop around, but was unable to beat the renewal, unusually.

Here's a deal on Groupon from Emergency Assist.  £24 for premium cover, which includes national recovery and home start. Buy it via TopCashback and you get 12% cashback as well!  :y

As Ive mentioned before, I use Autoaid for around £40 a year, and have used the service a few times. I cant fault it tbh. I'm pretty sure its UK only though.

I'm with Autoaid at the moment, but havn't had to call them out yet so can't comment on their service.  ;)

I think that the big boys in the breakdown world trade on and charge for their brand, rather than the service they provide.  ::)

Unlike the smaller ones who, having no brand can't charge much, and actually provide no service when you actually need it.

I've been with 3 breakdown companies.

1) RAC - 2 callouts. 1st left me for 3 hours in the dark on a twisty A road between Henley and Reading, despite me telling them that I was stranded in a dangerous spot.  >:(  2nd broke down in Bristol and they told me that they couldn't get anyone to me for at least 5 hours!  :o I told them not to bother and walked home! >:(

2) Rescuemycar.com - 5 callouts over 9 years membership.  Each time someone was with me within an hour. Was recovered home 3 times without any quibbles or aggro.  :y  I paid about £19 a year premium plus 5 x £40 callout excess, which works out about £41 a year. A massive saving on the Big Boys of the breakdown industry!  :y  Unfortunately they won't accept cars over 16 years old which rules out my BMW.  :(

3) Autoaid - Been with them for the last couple of years, but havn't had to call them out.  I think the premium is about £40-50 for any car cover and there are no age restrictions.  :y

I can only speak as I find. Ive used Autoaid 3 times in 3 years. First time waited 10 minutes, second time just over an hour, third time about an hour and a half.
I wouldn't have  expected any better if I had paid £100+ to RAC/ AA etc.

I,ve been with Autonational for a number of years now but, in over ten years of Omega ownership i have yet to need them. If that,s not pushing my luck i don,t know what is. :D

Last time I had to call for breakdown service was in 2005, just outside Dijon.  So I must be due one... ;D

Been with the AA since 1984,had to call them out 4 times so far, on only 1 of those occasions have they fixed it at the roadside. They could have fixed the Omega at the roadside[crank sensor went and I had spare in glovebox]but we were in a pretty dangerous spot for a roadside repair so they towed us home[it was only a couple of miles]and I fitted that myself the following day.No complaints about their service.Used to pay them direct but a few years ago started getting it through my bank account as others have.

Autoaid. Been with them years, called out the once, all sorted, even though I was in one of my yanks and they didn't cover LHD at the time.

Then I had to pay the recovery guy up front and claim the money back - which was very efficient. I'm sure I read that now they pay on your behalf. Could be mistaken though.

I guess the wait is dictated by the local firm they use, and some of those will be better than others.

I've never heard of Autoaid before.

Do they cover the person for driving any car or do they cover the car like Green flag does on mine and my son's car. My sons car is over 16 years old this October. Mine's up for breakdown renewal at the end of the month.

Thanks

I'm pretty sure its the person covered and not a particular car.

Just checked on their site and you are 100% correct. But you have to be the one driving at the time of breakdown.

I still can't find any info about the maximum age of the car covered.

Easy enough to swap seats when recovery arrives.  ;) Recovery driver wont care as he gets paid directly from them when he has done the job.  :)

They have no age limit as far as I'm aware.  I checked with them when I switched to them a couple of years ago after falling foul of RescueMyCar's 16 year limit.  :)

They may have introduced one though in the last couple of years so might be worth a phone call.  ;)

Autoaid recovered my 27 year old Merc last year, so I don't think there is an age limit.  ;)

All breakdown companies are only as good as the agents working for them ;)

Fully agree with that. Maybe Ive been lucky so far with autoaid, but the three drivers I had were all pretty good.

Its the person and their spouse driving any car.

Ive called them out twice over five years or so.  No complaints.   Just ring their central number and they arrange a local agent to attend.  Both times took about an hour as I recall.   They even rang me periodiocally to give me an update on how long the wait would be which was a nice touch.   I'm not aware of vehicle age restrictions.   It does cover homestart but there is a premium for Euro cover.

Can only speak for fleet cover from AA.

2x Breakdown, both times able to get to safety, so no need to hurry.  I'm getting paid to sit here and play Pool on my phone.

BUT....... Neither time has the AA turned up.  It's always a third party.

(Note: Vauxhall Vivaro Van, 2017).

I had similar with works van, with RAC. I think fleet contracts get the lowest priority.

I my case 7hrs was the worse, waiting for them to turn up. Shame the ex-pub I was parked up near wasn't open, as it was a bloody cold, dark night.

I think you may be right, although the last callout was in Suffolk, so a different out fit that time.
