The batteries in my 4 or 5 year old Makita drill have died. :(
I can get replacements on ebay for about £30 which seems reasonable, but they are more powerful than the originals. 3ah as opposed to the 1.3ah that the OEM batteries are. :-\
Any issues with this? ??? As I understand it, it means that they'll last longer, but I don't want to burn the motor out.... ::)

You won't burn the motor oput as long as the VOLTAGE is the same; the 3Ah figure means that they have managed to get a greater electrical capacity in the same physical size, so as you surmised, it will last longer between charges.
Dedpending on how dead your original batteries are, there is a naughty way of, possibly, reviving them.
PM me for details if you are interested.
Ron.

Yes both 18V Ron. :y
They are dead as a Dodo unfortunately. Can't get a charge into them at all. :(
I saw a youtube vid where a guy was demonstrating replacing dead cells in drill batteries which seemed straight forward. I need the drill soon though so havn't time to faff at the moment. ;)

Just be sure to read the reviews of your chosen seller. Some are fine, some have been known to cause fires when charging :o.
Got my dad some for his DeWalt drills off Amazon that were about 45% of the price of a DeWalt battery. Lasted 2 yrs so far, no issues :y

Yeah, be choosy, even more choosy if lithium.
-
Choosy is not a word I've ever been associated with. ;D
-
Just a word of warning... A mate of mine has just had his house burnt down by a cheapo garage worklight containing a lithium battery. :(
-
Yeah, be choosy, even more choosy if lithium.
Good point. My father's were NiCad, even so I was still cautious.

Back in the days when I used to do RC buggy racing, I've blown up a few NiCd packs by abuse charging them. I recall one went spectacularly on the main straight during a final. Oops.
On Sunday, I saw a Lithium Polymer pop when a model plane lost control and hit the runway quite hard.

Mine lives in a dedicated pouch for that very reason...
Should probably finish the plane that it belongs to :-[

I need more pouches. I have one small one, and from where I am currently sat, can see 15 Lipos :-[
