Title: External storage - recommendations?
Post by: Andy H on 23 March 2019, 21:07:55
Looking for something to carry in hand luggage with a copy of my digital life on it.

At a guess 1TB should be enough.

All recommendations/personal experiences/disaster stories welcome....

It has been years since I last bought any IT equipment and I haven't got a clue as to which vendors are good & which are cr*p. I have also lost track of the disk manufacturers reputations.

Are ebuyers any good?

This https://www.ebuyer.com/798629-wd-elements-portable-4tb-external-hdd-wdbu6y0040bbk-wesn?reevoo_page=3#reevoo_embedded_reviews (https://www.ebuyer.com/798629-wd-elements-portable-4tb-external-hdd-wdbu6y0040bbk-wesn?reevoo_page=3#reevoo_embedded_reviews) would be more than big enough.

That's to say, your hand luggage may well be hold loaded at the gate ;)

I had a Western igital 1.5 GB external drive which lasted a few weeks, to be replaced under warranty by a 2 GB one - which itself failed after a few more months. Does that give you a clue? :( :(

I did wonder quite what point you were making - my (limited) experience of airport security has resulted in removing anything metal on my person and sticking it through the scanner with my cabin/hand luggage.

why do you need it so big  :-\
surely stuff you need would fit on a memory stick
hard drives and SSDs are big in size ,get x-rayed  :-\ for security

Samsung SSDs have a good reputation for reliability & i have had no problems with them or their SD cards to date. As well as Ebuyer also check out box.co.uk prices as they at times can be cheaper.

Without wishing to be obtuse, why carry anything at all? My digital life is pretty much 100% stored online. I've travelled pretty extensively and never had issues getting access to it.  :-\

If I'm working on a flight (rare due to the limited space!) I just load what I intend to work on onto my laptop/tablet.

Portable spinny type disks always have reliability issues, just by the fact they are frequently moved/knocked/banged/squashed.  Portable SSDs do fair better, but can suffer bit rot, so possibly not idea for long term backups.

In this scenario, I think I'd invest in cloud storage.  If you also use MS Office, then MS Office 365 may be a good starting point - 1 office licence and 1Tb cloud storage for £59pa, for 5xOffice and 5x 1Tb for £79 (from memory).  If a Mac user, crApple's iCloud might be favourite - think Mrs TB pays £2pm for 50Gb.  If a Linux user, plenty of cloud storage providers using standard open source systems for not much more than above.

But all depends on your needs.

If buying hardware, Ebuyer, BT Shop (formally Dabs), Box and the like are all competitive and reputable - due to price voltatility, I tend to check prices across a handful of reputable suppliers.

Ive got a couple of 2TB WD Elements USB Drives, never had any issues with them, having said that I am paranoid about Back Ups, and more to the point Backing Up my Back Ups, most of my Last Resort Baks are Cloud Based, more than one Provider.

Think I would agree, and if going on your Travels just use a Cloud Solution, unless you really do need to shift tons of Data around on a daily basis.

The Big 3 all work well, Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, Onedrive can be a bit of an arse if using Win10 due to way its needs to Sync itself with the PC, you need the same Free Space on your PC plus more as your OneDrive allowance in order to upload stuff without user intervention, but even then its bloody slow, infact your probably use up your 12 months subscription before you manage to upload a couple of TB's, I do use OneDrive but I use a URL Uploader or an Uploader that breaks the Files into Packets but we wont bother too much about that now.

Another Provider that I highly rank is pCloud, a Swiss / German based Cloud Service, quiet fast, good for all Devices the Cloud Space can be Mounted as a Virtual Drive on you PC, has some nice features, like URL Uploading as well as an Archive Folders so it will automatically grab and store any Google, OneDrive etc Services you have, they also do some Lifetime Plans 500gb or 2TB, not cheap, but if your serious about Cloud Storage and keeping your Data safe worth considering.

Stay away from all the unknown Cheap or Free Cloud Services offering you loads of Terabytes for next to nothing, and stay away from the eBay Sellers offering Google or OneDrive accounts for a few quid, there all Uni Accounts from across the Globe and could get nuked tomorrow.
