Omega General Help / Re: cambelt/tensioner costs?
« on: 31 May 2013, 06:55:06 »
cheers guys,
I was sort of hoping around the £250 mark  :-[. Oh well, will see what my usual garage can do it for. Something to save up for methinks...Problem with trying to do it myself-quite apart from mechanical ineptitude ;D-is lack of garage and lack of tools! Ive gained some confidence through doing bits and pieces myself but I think this job well beyond both comfort zone and abilities!
cheers for replies :y

apologies for not responding sooner guys. Its a 2.5V6 , but its certainly not something I could do myself so just asking what the ballpark cost should be in your opinion to have the cambelt/tensioner done. Cheers

interesting thread. Ive read an English translation of the Koran, as well as the old and new testaments and I guess the problem is -just as you can with any book, on any subject-choose to emphasize certain points whilst ignoring others and basically interpret it as you see fit. A cursory look at the Muslim empires of history will show that many were actually very tolerant of other faiths but, as with all beliefs, whether religious or political, there are always extremists who will brook no opposition or dissention. Tigers post rings true-for some sections of the Islamic world- and it is naturally a very valid concern.I was listening to an Islamic leader on the radio only yesterday who was making similar points and who was critical of traditional Islamic groups within Western societies who, whilst preaching tolerance and the concept of living a "good" life and doing no harm to others, still made no effort to integrate the two cultures. For me though, such religious (or political) beliefs are just that-beliefs. It doesnt make them true, and I reserve my right to challenge them as I see fit. Im not deliberatly knocking anyones religion (whatever faith they may be) but few seem to have too much proven historical facts to back them up so they might as well be fairy stories as far as Im concerned  ; ;D After all, you dont have to subscribe to a religion to try and live a moral and ethical life do you?  :-\Politics and religion eh. Interesting but may be safer to just talk about football or cars.....

General Discussion Area / Re: Taboo subject - Gay marriage
« on: 22 May 2013, 18:45:41 »
Marriage is a union between man and woman and that is the way it should stay.
Its not something that a politician should interfere with.
Even if they feel it will win them some votes  >:(
If your gay then your gay.
I'm a pretty tolerant and open minded bloke like that.
At the end of the day, what peoples sexual preferences is is nothing to do with me.
If they want to show there feelings by entering a civil partnership then good on them and good luck too them BUT no government has any right to interfere with this.

All in my opinion  ;)

Totally agree mate  :y
To mine -and many others'-mind, the concept of marriage is about the partnership between a man and a woman. Gays already have a civil partnership which should both demonstrate their commitment as well as provide both parties with legal rights/responsibilities so why would they want to be "married"? It would then alter the very concept of marriage. PC madness again. Plus there are all these side issues such as recognition (or not) of a UK "marriage" or "civil partnership" abroad. I understand that pension rights was one of the differences that has been an issue but surely those in a civil partnership should have the same rights there as in a marriage. Theyre even talking about the introduction of civil partnerships for hetrosexual couples FFS just so the 2 options are open for all, which wont make one iota of difference to those many couples who may have lived together for years but never married, unless of course, they choose to take up the civil partnership option and whats the likelihood of that? Madness.

Hadnt heard this, and I was only watching the recent program on the making of LA Woman earlier today! Dont know when the program was made, but of all the surviving members Ray was the one who looked in the best health. Sad news. Though Morrison had his demons -and frankly could be quite a kn*b who's "poetry" to my mind could be pretentious at least-he had a great voice and all members of the band were obviously talented musicians, not least Manzarek. Iconic band and a great keyboard player who was integral to their sound.

Just got the new Astra. Its the 2 ltr cdti sports tourer automatic sri and very nice it is too! Certainly shows how things have moved on since the mig. Nice styling (though all new estates these days are similarly styled to avoid the boxy look of the past), good ride and plenty of both cabin space and load space. The sports seats are good too. Plenty of power (roughly the same as my 2.5 migggy) , though the turbo lag does mean its a lot slower off the mark than the petrol v6! On the other hand it'll probably save me about £15 a week in fuel  ;D. Very impressed-though at around 27k new its certainly overpriced and little wonder that most are built to order for lease use. Havent used the "manual" function on the autoibox yet but basic "drive" select is fine. Biggest difference is that the brakes on the new Astra are about 200% sharper than the old omega so have to be a bit carefull when Im driving the mig if Ive used the Astra for a few days ;D

For the moment, let's ignore the bit about knocking a cylist off his bike . . . stupid, arrogant, dangerous, yes of course

. . . . . the really certifiable stupidity is tweeting about it. Amazing  :o

What is it about Twitter that deactivates people's brains ?    ???

yep, never ceases to amaze me how so many people put stupid comments on facebook/twitter etc and seem to think that no-one out there who they dont want to see them will get to hear about it! Ive almost lost count of the number of idiots who have called in sick at work only to then find themselves in trouble because theyve posted photos/comments of their night on the lash or else thoughtlessly post stuff that gets them into trouble with relationships or work. Many companies now include making certain comments on social network sites part of their disciplinary processes. Overall I guess social networks are a good thing but their openess to abuse, especially regarding various forms of bullying/slander cant be ignored.Problem is that too many posters either forget that such posts arent as private as they think they are (and that records of posts cannot so easily be deleted) and , more importantly, simply dont engage brain before they type ;D

General Car Chat / Re: how to parallel park!
« on: 02 May 2013, 21:50:38 »
That amused me ;D Seen quite a few of these-many of them a hell of a lot worse than this one! At least she got there in the end. At the risk of sounding sexist ( ::)), all the ones Ive seen have featured women drivers too. Im not denying that there are a lot of poor male drivers out there but maybe the whole "spacial awareness" thing is borne out by such examples? TBH, SWMBO will always avoid parallel parking if she can and our daughter similarly avoids it. Maybe not enough time given to it when learning? I clearly remember that my daughter was once struggling to parallel park outside our house and she really didnt know where to look to judge the turn. I stood on the pavement , told her where to look out of the rear side window and to aim for where I was standing and she parked it perfectly. Maybe it'd be good if all cars were kitted out with that hands-free automatic parking device I saw on Top Gear a while back?

Hmm, didnt that bloke (could use more appropriate language  >:() who was found guilty of killing his kids in a fire get "life" ie 25 yrs with a possibility of serving just 15? Which is the more hienous crime? Maybe that old adage about crimes around money being treated more seriously than crimes against lives holds some water? :-[
