I looked at this but I'm too thick to understand. :-\

Does it mean that a plate on retension is not actually on the car, and that the said plate is not actually owned by anyone?

On retention, means you have the right to use the registration but are retaining it on a certificate for a later date.
The plate is either assigned to a vehicle, i.e. is actually on the vehicle or is 'on retention'.

Blandings............. :D :D

Have you got, or are you buying a number that is not on a car? If you buy a number and do not put it straight on a car it will be on 'Retention' until you put it on a car, same if you are changing cars, you may take it off before selling and put it on Retention....... :y :y

No....but I have a private plate on car that I own.........Would this make me liable for retention fees that seem to vary between £25 and £130 a year?

If the plate is assigned to a vehicle, there is no fee. If you removed the plate and put it on retention (i.e. on a certificate) you would be liable for fees.

A retention cert is just a way of 'banking' a number to use on a car at a later date.

If you are serious I can PM you the number, Mr Vamps. I don't think it's worth much. :y

Also, if I sell it what number would replace it? I suppose that's  for the DVLC to decide.

My neighbour has an X red Honda Civic with 'OOF' suffix if anyone might want to make a offer. I think they'll be scrapping it or selling it on soon  ???
