Distributorless Ignition System or something similar. As it's all solid state you don't need an old-style rotating distributor.

Correct.  This system is also commonly termed "Wasted Spark" as both pair of ignition coils fire together.  1 coil fires at the end of the compression stroke (the spark that is required) and at the same time the other coil fires on the exhaust stroke (this is the spark that is wasted as it is firing on the exhaust stroke of the cylinder).

This does, of course, mean that the plugs are firing twice in every cylinder cycle as quickly as opposed to those in conventional system which fire only once, at the end of the compression stroke.

Or single coil per cylinder arrangements, which of course fire only when required for the necessary cylinder.

That tends to be labelled as a coil per plug system rather than dis, to differentiate its (alledged) superiority...

They should be better, but the Vauxhall v6 coil per plug units do seem to be showing a lot of failures. But at least they are eaiser to change ;D
