36+ MPG on Omega Elite 3.2 V6
« on: 22 June 2008, 15:43:57 »

Just came back from Manchester - 210 miles - used 5.7 gallons petrol.

Used cruise control at 62 mph with revs staying at 2100. Average speed for journey from computer was 56mph

Range at best mix (i.e. miles travelled plus mile range remaining) was 584 miles.

Mostly motorway but not bad I think. Took me 45 mins longer thsn usual.

Goes to show what you can get with a light right hoof.
My 3.2 only manages about 21mpg around town if i am lucky,26mpg on along run.

That's something to try for me then... my 2.6 averages about 23mpg in mixed driving, largely because I drive everywhere like I've set myself alight and tried to put it out with petrol... I start every journey with the intention of driving carefully and economically, but the first member of the 40mph club ahead of me, I take a safe overtake, then the right foot tends to stay down... :)

If the traffic isn't too heavy & your on the motorways it definitely helps fuel consumption when you use Cruise Control as the old lead foot stays off the gas, used it a lot over the years with different motors funny too used to notice cars pass me then few miles up the road you pass them & you havn't altered your speed at all!!:y

The V6 is surprising frugal on a run at constant speed.  Around town blasting soon kills the mpg though  :-X

Well done good fuel economy. It goes to show if you drive a car smoothly you can get great mpg. Also the load on all other parts of the car are reduced helping on maintenence costs in the future. :y

Well done there. Top Gear just proved it too. A BMW M3 just beat a Toyata Prius on fuel economy round the top gear track for 10 miles.

Strong message of "it's not what you drive, it is how you drive".

So true.

I did a brim to brim check on mine last fill. I'd done the run to Portsmouth (when my HBV decided to start leaking) and a couple of days around town.

MID showed 32.3... Actual calculated was 32.7 so pretty close. I cruise on the main dual carriageways/motorways at an indicated 74, so actual approx 71 mph and had to hoof it a bit very close to 3 figures!! :-[ :-[ for the last 20 miles or so of the journey down as we were running late.

I'm pretty happy with this and am looking forward to saving even more that I thought when I stick the LPG on!!! :y :y :y

Did 120 miles this afternoon, mainly motorway, but a bit of rural and some villages too. Sat at 60mph on the A1 apart from when I was passing heavies, when I'd get up to 70mph... I'm considerate like that.
Apart from one short blast up to (ahem) 70mph and no more down a rural DC, I was driving like a vicar... and got 31.5mpg. Well impressed with that, as I said I'm more used to 23-34... and I've got no cruise control or willpower...

Day to day, my MV6 auto gets currently around 25mpg with A/C on.  Daily commute is 25m each way on slow backroads, 50mph max (apart from a short section of MK grid road ::)

Is yours auto or manual? And when was it last serviced (plugs and iflters)? Checked the tyre pressures?

Failing that, I'd say there was something wrong in the engine, unless you do a lot of stop-start driving... my town driving tends to be at night so I can at least keep moving...

Serviced every six months, not checked tire pressures in a while i'll admit that. Its an Auto so I do put some of it down to that! My daily commute is bit of both really ring road to work 5 mile each way in off peak times so not too much stop start! then into leeds to pick the gaffa up through rush hour i'd say another 5 miles each way. but even when I was not going into leeds at rush hour I was still getting around 18.5mpg average in 1 week!!

The engine is sweet as a nut, I just used some Fortec Gas treatment a few tanks ago as recomended by a member. Not noticed any difference really but gonna keep using it every 10 tanks or so!

I can't imagine what could be wrong!!

just turned 46000 miles so its not like its done millions of miles!

I'm baffeled!!

vac pipes to plenum and bag pipes solenoid thingys... daw what are they called??? blip engine to above 4k and you should see them actuate, if they dont work you have to press the peddle harder to get the car to go, hense bad mpg, might be that, try 4 electrode plugs as well ;)

.. and in a 5 mile journey (or even 10 miles) a significant amount of the journey will be with a cold engine.

Thats good.

My 2.0 CD has no Cruise but I try and keep it round an indicated 75mph and I average 39.1MPG over 205 miles which I was impressed with.

I think If I did an indicated 70 (Around 65-66mph real) id get around 40, maybe 41mpg which is good I think considering the weight.

i managed to get 210mpg this morning out of my 2.6 CDX, i thought that was pretty good  :y
I did do the journey on LPG so i sippoes that's cheating a bit   ;D

Mid was showing 28.7mpg , that was a mix of Motorway and fast A roads, air con on all the way, on LPG i reckon i was getting 20-20 mpg

My consumption was greatly increaed recently by having the timing kit put back as intended (NEW kit) The difference id from around an average of 24 to now 32.

On motorways this is around 35ish. and in town a respectable 26 ish. Mine is a manual though. I get a 2.0 auto estate this week so will be interesting to see how that compares.

I use my 3.2MV6 for business and find it averages about 34mpg at 70mph and up-to 38mpg if cruising between 50-60mph (average speed on a Friday ride home on the M6 or M1).

Working in London for the week, I reset it and saw the average drop to 11.5mpg during the 8 mile round trip between hotel and place of work with an average speed of 12mph!

Don't you just love London.

It's the town driving that really nails the V6. I do a lot around town and only get 21-22 according to the MID that with an average speed of 23 :(. How ever I've been doing a lot more M- way driving lately and have been experimenting with different cruising speeds, I've found that setting the cruise at 67 mph it returns an MPG figure of circa 38. Not bad especially with the price of fuel now. I used to "give it the bifters" on the M-way conditions permitting, O.K. it takes a bit longer to get there, driving at sub speed limit but I find it more relaxing. A bit worrying really, Is It a sign of getting old? :o ;)
