If no diesel, sounds like misfire issue to me?
IMO do the paper clip test, (not all codes bring the light on.) and go from there, if no relevant fault codes I would strongly suspect ignition system which is not very well monitored by ecu on this engine. Check plug wells for oil first, then change plugs then leads then dis PAC until the fault is found.
Not blocked fuel filter as it's using too much fuel, which also points to miss fire, no spark but fuel still being delivered, engine does not go so pedal pressed harder, fuel wash in the boar may cause damage, so do not drive the car.
Should have done paperclip test to read codes first of all, then mess with maff plug, now we don't know if maf code is current or not....
Anyway, start with paper clip test, fix problem first. Serviceing parts only introduces more unknowns.
