LSD casting number

Is there a casting or p/n on the casing of an LSD?
If so does anyone know what it is or how you can tell with a car that does not drive??
As i think i might have found one on E-Bay but not sure.
Any help would be great.

Damn. Was just about to suggest a quick doughnut in Tecso's car park usually settles that one.

I would imagine the castings are the same whether it's an LSD or not. Just depends what gubbins is put into the casting at a later date You're probably looking for a little metal plate or even a label attached to the diff.

There is a plate on them...the LSD ones have (I think) an I as part of the part code and the non LSD ones dont...

This is the trouble with E-bay, the bloke says it used to light up the rears but is not 100% whether it is an LSD or not.
I was hoping that i could tell him something to identify it somehow..

I was wondering about the diff in mine. Last weekend I pulled away in the wet with the traction control off and instead of sliding sideways it sort of wiggled it hips (sorry) as if one wheel was losing traction and then gripping and different time to the opposite wheel.

There is a flat area about 1 1/4" x 3/4" on bottom of main diff case, this would have had a sticker on it with type number and serial....might still be there but most have rusted off by now.

I guess if you jack up one wheel and turn then it would allow a bit of rotation but tighten up as you tried to turn faster.

Only sure way of checking is to remove rear cover....ordinary diff has planet gears visible, LSD has everything enclosed.

Is the LSD type diff a direct replacement of the old diff or is the any thing else that has to be done or got as well??

Reasonably sure the diff internals are the only difference.  

If you think it through, GM would not knowingly go for alternate size driveshafts to the wheels or a propshaft to drive the diff when the same ones would do across the range.  

Change the internals only, put a paper sticker on the outside to let the factory fitters know and save a few shillings.....
