Need help/ideas with infrared remotes
« on: 20 July 2021, 08:36:05 »

Hi. One of our Omegas 1994 model has the old IR remote system where you need to point it at the roof. Car only got central locking. No alarm system. But there is a immobilizer which will only turn off with the remote. The car side of things works fine, but the remotes are the problem. Car has two, but the good one suddenly died a while back. No power/red led. Power reaches circuit board from batteries but nothing happens when button is pushed. The one currently in use had a faulty switch for the main button so that it turns on with just lightly touching it. The consequence is that it is constantly out of power because it activates itself when you carry it around.
Tried getting a functioning second hand one and took it to Opel but they said they couldnt get it coded to the car. They said the remotes had to be new. Cant seem to find new ir remotes for the Omega anywhere.
What are my options here? I know i can deactivate the immobilizer and just use the key, but would like to keep everything working as it should.
Dont really dare to try changing the faulty microswitch on the working remote myself since its the only working remote and if i screw it up im out of options….

No reason it has to be a new remote - the car doesn't know either way.

To program the IR type, though, does require a Tech1 or Tech1a, with the Omega specific cartridge.

I was thinking repair of the current one(s), but didn't figure on the member being in a cold place far away  ;D

Thanks for the replies. Will try the Opel dealer again, or go to a different dealer if not succesful. Had a suspicion last time i was there that they really didnt know how to correctly program the remotes.

Had an original fob reprogrammed on my early elite, pretty sure he used tech 2.
Not the same type that Martin repairs.

Tech2 definitely, absolutely, 100% cannot do Omega IR remotes.  Tech2 can only do the RF remotes from 1996 onwards cars, both the ones on a separate fob or the integrated type.

No he didn't, as the Tech2 doesn't have the software to communicate with the IR central locking module that GM used on the Omega.

Not sure if the Omega one had a back door programming scheme like, for example, Ford's old immobiliser scheme of programming from a primary key?  But it wasn't a GM Tech2 used.  Unless he had written a Tech2 module to do it, after reverse engineering how the module communicates.
