Sadly , still a lot of bitter memories for some people , I used to work with some Northumberland coal miners , they would often voice "full and frank " opinions about Mrs T  :(

They had a full blown party, complete with burning effigy, in Grimethorpe when she died.

If any of you guys had/will be bothered to read up on the whole affair on the miners and you will find that it was not MT that closed the most mines! it was a Harold Wilson???. I was in Port Talbot during the worst of it after coming back from South Africa. I will always remember talking to a few union leaders in the hotel I was staying in and meeting one of the many union guys there. One of them said to me quote "do you know what NCB means?" Yes, I said, nope he uttered its "No C*NT BOTHERS" I changed my whole outlook on the miners and unions after that.  >:( >:(

Oh, I think we know enough about such things in South Yorkshire  ;D
I'll have to tell the tens of thousands of ex miners here that some Jock said they got it all wrong. That should make them sit up  ::)

Only in a democracy. You get a vote and then complain about the incumbent you voted in. . It really isnt fair. You could have been given Franco, Putin or Xi!

Unions only exist to serve the few that run them. The last people they have any interest in are the paid up members.

Without unions we might still have cheap energy and generations of families not dependant on dole money :-X

Over here in ABS, we had a member whose father was the leader of the NUM before Scargill
He told us that his father warned many that to vote Scargill in as leader when he retired would cause no end of problems
He said that with the agenda Scargill had would signify the end of the union as they knew it and cause the closure of most of the mines
Just repeating what he said in a converstion to us at Billing one year

Yep, those who still hate her because of what happened to the miners need to take an objective look at the whole thing, with the benefit of hindsight.
They would then be burning effigies of Scargill instead.
I hated her at the time, because I was young and stupid. When I grew up I realised she was the best PM of my lifetime.
Its hard to imagine what would have become of this country if she hadnt came to power.

Scargill caused more pit closures than Thatcher did.Traditionally when the miners went on strike the pit deputies were allowed to go down to keep the pits safe for when the miners returned[preventing build up of gasses/flooding etc]in the strike of '84 Scargill largely put a stop to the deputies being allowed past the picket lines and down the pits so many couldn't be "revived".

Got to agree fully with you, as for unions I can't fault them been in  COHSE & the POA both served me excellently when I needed their services.

We would also still be firing people for not being able to work due to easily avoidable industrial accidents(assuming they managed to survive), and exploiting 12 year olds for their size and cheapness. But that can't have been all bad can it?

There must be one or two still stuck up a Victorian chimney somewhere, although they are more likely to be 8 years old rather than 12. ::)

she was a crafty sod. gave council house dwellers a chance to buy their houses then curbed the rights of workers to strike so the fear of losing their homes played a big part in the mining community, i do remember one Sunday i went to watch a rugby league game & hundreds of police turned up & took up a whole terrace. they were supposed to be policing miners that were picketing the Selby mines but no miners were there. no police had numbers on their uniforms so whenever any complaints they could not be identified.

A mate of mine now retired was in the Police & did a lot of extra hours whilst supporting the local force, helped him pay off a massive chunk of his mortgage, he thought Maggie was heaven sent.

OK, what about bauxite or gravel or lithium or copper etc?

Most raw materials come from the ground. Which gives two choices... mines, enclosed or opencast, or returning to the Stone Age.  ???

That was always available for long-term tenants. The difference was that money was reinvested in the housing stock, whereas Thatcher's selloff specifically denied that option. Many councils then used that for short term political gain. But as always when you start using capital for ordinary expenses, you permanently opps up your medium and long term prospects.

The North Sea gas profits were similarly wasted on political dogma

I believe there were multiple cases of the police waving £5 notes in the faces of the miners manning the picket lines. All they had was a pittance of strike pay.

Quite right too. In order to earn wages, you first have to do a day's work.
