Sudden drop in MPG
« on: 18 October 2007, 21:52:17 »

Been happily returning around 29 - 31 average Mpg for a while now on my daily commute, but something has changed, I seem to have dropped to 21 - 23 now, the only two factors that may have changed this are that I replaced the fuel filter and i've switched from V Power to normal Shell / BP.

The old fuel filter was actually on the wrong way round (flow pointing to the back of the car) so I corrected this when I replaced it, I have checked the filter / fittings / fuel pump etc for leaks and found nothing (engine running so fuel pressure) and I can't smell petrol which I would expect if there is a leak.

Changing fuel hasn't lowered performance and the emissions light is still off.

No vacuum leak in evidence under the bonnet

Running out of ideas now

I would double check for an Air Leak that can alter your MPG

Yeh, have had a similar problem before with the brake servo Vac pipe that MDTM spotted and fixed for me. Can't hear any hissing under the bonnet that would indicate an air leak TBH.

I was returning about 26 - 29 before I switched to V power but dropping to 21 - 23 surely isn't right!!!!

Thanks

[quote author=VXL i've switched from V Power to normal Shell / BP.

I would maybe give V- power a try as i found  that when i changed to normal petrol it seem to lower the MPG not sure by how much but made a diff.

May sound slily by have you check the psi in the tyres to see if they are down i know with mine that can also make a diff.

Hope that help in some way :y

21-22 mpg seems to be about my avarage on my 50 mile daily commute in my 3.2 estate, although the huge non-standard tyres could account for a bit. ::)

I lose economy on V power - BP or Shell 95 Ron is better for mine...

I have not noticed any real difference with V power.   I could convince myself it feels like its running cleaner/more responsive and maybe does 1-2 mpg better, but very marginal.

No way could it explain that kind of an increase in consumption.

Are you reading this off the MID - that could be misleading.

Why not switch back to V power and see what difference it makes?

I've been using the MID throughout so all figures have been taken from that. Switching back to normal unleaded after a few tankfuls of V power shouldn't cause that sort of MPG loss, especially if it was higher than it currently is before the V Power.....

Definately seems to be using a lot more when booting it, OK a 3.2 will but not to the extent it is now.

One other thought is that it may take a while for the ECU to correct for the lower Octane (depending on how long ago you switched back) and this may disrupt economy for a bit.

Just a long  shot VXL but just thinking back to the 02 sensor prob do you think that it could have something to do with that even without it putting on the light.Or i recall something about the MAF sensor.
