On my 2002 3.2L Sport my cats are rattling and I have bought a new set.

I know it can be problematic to unscrew the nuts on manifolds and I wonder if there is a good method to do this without breaking the bolts holding the cats to the manifold.

Should I heat the nuts? Or can it be done without heating and still not breaking the bolts.

Appreciate any advice.

Manifold to downpipe ones?  Never had an issue on any of mine.  Ideally use a good hex socket rather than the usual 12 point ones.

If its manifold to head, never down that, DTM did all mine

Always give a good spray with releasing fluid long before you start 👍

And a good whack to the centre of each bolt head with a punch, screwdriver, etc, to allow the penetrating oil to get in there.

It's more comfortable to ensure you're wearing your favourite yarmulke, facing Mecca on your mat while praying to the Holy Trinity that the stud doesn't snap.


If you want to do something that's actually useful, wire brush the grot off the nut and exposed threads before putting a socket anywhere near them. A little lube on those threads might help the nut turn over them, but any oil will do that.

I disagree, it's helped me in the past, and it certainly can't do any harm.  But if you want to face Mecca on your prayer mat, don't be surprised if you end up on arsebook.

Heat. Get them glowing red hot, then undo. Works every time
