Radiator help
« on: 09 April 2007, 09:40:54 »

Seeing as nobody will sell me a rad today, bloody holidays, if I remove mine, is there any way to tell if its blocks/partially blocked/restricted or anything else that would cause my problems?

Or anyone not too far away at a loose end and want to cast their opinion over it?

Remove the viscous fan and see if you can feel cold areas on the radiator when running?
Or remove it, chuck a kettle of hot water through it and try the same test.

Might be worth putting a hose on the inlet and ensuring it will flow the full output of the hose. This isn't a lot but if there are any signs of it struggling it will be no good on the car.

Once it's off you could try some more aggressive methods of flushing out. Fill it with petrol / gunk and leave it to soak for a while?

Cheers,

Kevin

It seems evenly hot to touch, but as its ali, it will conduct heat...

I tried the hose in inlet, and it drains out almost (but not quite) as fast (in that it carries on running from bottom outlet for a couple of secs after hose goes off).

I take it you've eliminated the water pump Jaime?

Hmm. A tough one. Being ali, if the system's had to be topped up a lot and the anitfreeze has been diluted it's possible there's a good bit of corrosion inside the rad. As you say, the ali will conduct heat very well. If there's a layer of corosion on the inside it will still flow water pretty well, just not transfer the heat out of it.

Where's MarkDTM gone with that infrared camera?

Sammy Sledge should be able to give a balanced opinion  :y

I could pop by if you like, I need to borrow a soldering iron anyway to connect the new horn to the Senny.
