Smelly aircon
« on: 11 April 2007, 16:02:23 »

When I turn on my aircon it smells! The fan alone is ok and the aircon seems to work ok.
Any ideas?

Can happen.  You can get special sprays to overcome, Halfords sell them.  Usually, you start car, with A/C on full, hit the spray discharge button, and quickly shut the door, and it carries on discharging for a few mins....

The smells are not very nice bacteria...

The cans TheBoy mentions seem to work ok.

I take it you have not been using the aircon very much then?
Use it more, it does not have a signifacant effect on fuel usage, and is cheaper than fixing a system that has failed due to seals drying out.

Thats great, thanks for the replies. I havent had the car long and it had been standing for several months. I dont know if the previous owner used the aircon much. In my other car (V8 Discovery) I use the aircon in winter as well as it helps demisting.

Be prepared to clean your windcreen after, it left a right mess on mine when I used it on my last car....

Can confirm it is good stuff from Halfords but if it as been stood it will be the system that is trying to clean the dampness out of the car as been said it must be run at least once a week to make sure it is working but i wud definatly get the cleaner but if its been stood for all that time i wud clean the carpets in other words get a interior valet from a professional

Had to do a mates A4 a while back, it says leave all vents open.  It tends to leave a dampness everywhere, that needs wiping up afterwards...

My aircon was smelly today on the way home from the Drax do but I think it had something to do with the Boddingtons gas being recirculated ::)

Which one?
Mallard, Bittern, Sir Nigel Gresley, or Union of South Africa?
