Title: Final Reminder for those with old computers
Post by: TheBoy on 16 September 2017, 15:10:01
As we've been warning about for some time now, older computers might not be able to view OOF effectively soon - in fact you may start to see page glitches from now, but will get worse over the coming days.

Examples of problematic devices include:
Windows XP running IE (mileage may vary using Firefox or Chrome)
Pre ICS Android devices
Pre Blackberry 10
Symbian (ie, Nokia before Microsoft bought them)
pre iOS 4 gayDevices (I believe all iPads are iOS 4 or later, as are all iPhone 4 and later)

Anybody running anything from approx. 2010 (late 2011 for Andoid, the slackers) should be OK. Anybody running XP needs shooting, as does anybody running Android pre KitKat.  Most iPhones and iPod Touch gayDevices can go to iOS4.

Anything that still supported by its manufacturer will be fine.

Fully patched Vista, Win7, Win8 or W10 running the latest browsers (ie, IE9 for Vista, IE11 for Win7/8/10, or Edge for Win10, or latest Firefox (or Chrome or Safari if you're a bit soft in the bounce)) will be fine, as will iPhone 3GS/4/4S/5/5S/6/6S/7, iPads, OSX versions still under Apple support, Android 4.4.4 (KitKat) or later on Android phones and tablets. Recent Linux versions should also be fine, as long as updated as per the distro's recommendations.

Ron.
By the time Win95 was launched, Windows NT 3.1 was already out. That showed the world what Windows could and should be - stable, secure, premptive multitasking. Win9x/Me was simply Windows 3.1 with a few more bits recompiled as 32bit, and a new UI.

I always thought Win98 (SP2) wasnt a bad OS, worked for me, so did 2000 to a degree, funny how people dont mention Vista anymore, almost like a Taboo word, but I suppose we all know why.  ;D

I last had Windows 98 about 10 years ago, but when I think what I could do with that system and what I can do now with Windows 10, it is like looking back 40 years!  I suppose in IT terms W98 is like 40 years old, as technology advances so quickly, which I believe is doubling ever year(??) ;)

You should have it about 20 years ago Lizzie, keep up at the back.  ;D

Nope, I last had an old system with W98 in 2007, until I purchased a new system which itself was replaced in 2013. :D ;) ;)

Vista was a good enough OS, the reaction to it was mostly down to people not liking change...   ...and the notoriously lazy computer journos being the least willing to change.

As a test, those not sure, try going to the OOF Shop via the link in the menu near the top of the page (or via https://shop.omegaowners.com)

Its not a complete test, for technical reasons, but should confirm if your OS/browser combination supports SNI, which is part of the problem older systems will hit.

On what site? Shop or www.omegaowners.com?

If latter, make sure you are going to http not https as https does currently not load the static content

Next phase completed, do we still have our users with older devices?

If you have one of the devices mentioned in OP, and still working, post up OS and browser combo.  No need to reply if using Vista and Later, iOS 4 and later, Android KitKat or later, or a current Linux distro.

You *REALLY* need to upgrade that due to the massive holes Google keep leaving in their software. The only supported (thus usable on Internet) version of Android 4 is KitKat. Badger your provider for an update ;)

Device is unupdatable without being rooted*

Not a problem to me as laptop is 8.1 with latest IE, and phone is latest android with Chrome (:-X)

*If I cba to replace the cracked screen, then I mba to root it... but I cba ;D

A rooted Android device or Jailbroken iOS device is akin to sticking head in sand, arse in air, and encouraging everyone and their dog to give you a good butt rogering.

But whatever thrills you ;D

So, stay CBA for longer...

Over the Xmas period, if time allows, the plan is to enforce https for this site.

I'd ask everyone to start updating their links/bookmarks etc to https://www.omegaowners.com rather than http://www.omegaowners.com

Does that mean the OOF is now a fully protected site and our personal details are going to be more secure?

This just encrypts all transmissions between our webserver and your pc/device, and proves that the OOF webserver you are connecting to is the real OOF webserver, and not an imposter.

Does it protect your personal details we hold about people any more? Probably not. Most data leaks are due to either incompitence or flaws in the software answering queries from the internet.

I like to think I have some level of compitence, and the SMF developers are generally pretty quick off the mark when flaws are discovered. But nobody could ever guarantee there could never be a data leak.

End up in their carton, I reckon they approach 15U+.  More than enough for me to fit RAM into the top server in a 42U rack.  Apparently.
