Title: Two new Tesla's for the electric vehicle enthusiasts..
Post by: aaronjb on 17 November 2017, 09:26:23
OK, you might only get excited about one of them, because the other one is this:
(https://preview.ibb.co/eJFftR/the_tesla_semi_and_nikola_one.jpg) (https://ibb.co/joJN7m)
(Technically three new vehicles..)

400 miles on 30 minutes of charge.

(https://preview.ibb.co/mED0tR/image.png) (https://ibb.co/mr46YR)

New Roadster - 0-60 in 1.6seconds. Not much can keep up with that - even sportbikes. And a price tag to make your eyes water.

The first image has a certain demonic menace about it. I like it. :y

Zero to sixty in 1.6 seconds is roughly 2G.......and will probably hurt. ;)

Yes it`s all looking very `I Robot` and looks like it wants to kill humans  :-\

Once they become driverless it could get very scary  ;D

No worse than a glider winch launch (without the 2000' per minute rate of climb element). *;D

The Superchargers are already capable of delivering 120kW per car - they've talked about a new Supercharger capable of 350kW per vehicle before and these will be recharged by a new 'Megacharger'.. I guess north of 350kW.

Going to need quite the infrastructure.

I'd give that a go, too, but with 150Kg of me in the cockpit I don't think there'd be the required 2000'/min rate of climb! ;D

Until it crashes into the winch rather like the Challenger at the end of Vanishing Point.

Oh, I think the Chevy 502 in the winch would argue otherwise, but seat load is limited to 110 kg, unfortunately. :-[

STEMO - 23 st 10 ½ lbs at my last visit to fat club; 332lbs is almost dead on 150kg. So you should believe it ;)

Granted, that's down from 29 st 5 lbs (411lb or 186kg) on the 13th of Feb, but still a long way from the 110kg limit in a glider!

Maybe in another 9 months, if I'm really lucky, I could be down in that range ;) Unlikely, but maybe.

Think the electric lorry is a bit long fo a std 45" trailer, then there's the battery pack, think the available pay load won't be good, then there's the que of electric trucks waiting their turn to charge. Also what happens when it runs out of lectricky in the road works. Can't wait for this.

45 inches seems a bit short for a trailer  :-\

You aren't thinking outside the box. Each lorry driver will have a USB stick emergency power supply (bit like you get now for your mobile phone) . Just plug it in and away you go to your nearest charging point. Or what does a lorry do now when it runs out of fuel? Call out the breakdown truck.

Thanks STEMO  :)

Getting easier or harder to lose weight, Aaron?

Harder - although that's only really because we've had a tough few weeks with a lot of stress, little time to shop etc and resorted to food that isn't "on plan". The dog is about the only thing keeping us in balance at the moment!

Incidentally if anyone is lonely and single, I reckon SlimmingWorld groups would be a great place to pick up some desperate MILF action ;D

Yeah, right. It's estimated that to get the 500 mile range Tesla are claiming for the lorry it'll need a battery around 1200Kwh in size. Charging it in half an hour means a supply rated at least 2400kwh. From a 240V supply that's 10,000 amps  :o.

The reality is that you're going to have to drive this thing to your local nuclear power station to charge it up. The new Hinkley Point C is rated at 3200Mw. It'll be able to recharge about 2700 lorries per hour.  And that charge will get you about 500 miles, so what 10 hours driving? AIUI a normal diesel lorry can drive around for several days on a single fill up.

So the breakdown trucks "emergency charge" will pack a hell of a punch just like my USB sticks. :y

BTW LCOG (as I call you in my head.. pronounced "El Cog"), Superchargers are 480V DC, so it's a mere 5,000A of DC current. What could go wrong?

Incidentally, Elon says the Megachargers will be solar powered. I assume each one will come with a few square miles of solar panels.. which might well work in the middle of America (aka desert wasteland), but not the UK, I suspect!

It all smacks of "Meh - I'm sure we'll have figured out something by the time we let you order one." to me.

The obvious answer to the electric truck is to string power lines along the roads, and have a pantograph on the truck to get power, and a metal road for the return path. That would eliminate the need for a battery at all. The road wouldn't have to be as wide as a normal road, of course, as that would cost too much, so we could have a really narrow metal road and really narrow metal tyres on the truck. In fact, if they were too narrow, the truck would fall over, so what about two narrow metal roads about, ooh, 4ft 8 1/2 inches apart...
The driver would only have to hold on to a lever and look for red lights so he wouldn't need regular 28% pay rises or anything. Wouldn't be needed at all, if it weren't for the unions, actually.

Oh, hang on!  I'm sure Mr. Musk knows all this, though. ::)

Every two hours according to that masterpiece officialdom aka The Working Time Directive ::)

Legally, if you're not driving on the road, you only get a 20 minute break and then only if your shift time is over 12 hours :o go figure ???

Mr Musk plans to have a man on Mars by 2025, apparently.

I think he'll need more than a winged Tesla with an extra batttery pack to achieve such a feat. :)

450L tank 1600ks. After 4 1/2 hour a 45min break.  To do a 10 hour drive will need two 45 breaks.

Disconnecting tacho hasn't been done since advent of digi-tacho, use a magnet now.
